ALTOONA, PA - The Medaille College Women's Soccer team traveled to
Altoona, PA today seeking their first win in their AMCC campaign.
Penn State-Altoona created a number of early chances within the first 10 minutes of the match, but Alea Wade (Hamburg, NY, Frontier) and the Maverick defense proved equal to the task.
Medaille created two opportunities in the first period, but was unable to capitalize. Kalyn Compeau (Tonawanda, NY, Tonawanda)'s chance in the 18th minute was blocked by a Lions defender. Michelle Fiore (Tonawanda, NY, Kenmore East)'s attempt in the 29th minute sailed just wide of the goal.
The
Lions created an opportunity in the last minute of the 1st period, but
Wade was able to record a
big save and send the Mavericks to halftime
notted at (0-0).
Penn State-Altoona opened the 2nd half with an
offensive flurry, but Wade continued to stonewall the Lions coming up
with several big saves within the first 15 minutes of the period.
Following
a Penn State-Altoona foul in their own penalty box, the Mavericks
earned a penalty kick opportunity in the 61st minute. Unfortunately
Lions goalkeeper Mackenzie Strubhar was equal to the task and notched a
big save of her own to keep the game tied.
The Maverick defense
continued to turn away the Lions offensive onslaught throughout most of
the 2nd period. However, in the 79th minute Shoshana Mahoney found the
back of the net off of a feed from Ali Sheffler for the 1st goal of the
match to give Penn State-Altoona a (1-0) lead.
Medaille searched
for the equalizer but after a Strubhar save off the foot of Fiore in the
90th minute, Penn State-Altoona ended the match with a narrow (1-0)
victory.
The Mavericks will return to action on Sunday, October
11 in a home match against Franciscan University at All-High Stadium.
Kickoff is slated for 3:15 PM.
