Fredonia falls on corner kick

FREDONIA, New York -- Victoria Colotti headed in a corner kick in the 86th minute to carry Buffalo State over Fredonia, 3-2, in SUNYAC women's soccer Saturday afternoon.

Stationed directly in front of the net, Colotti beat several teammates and defenders to the ball sent into the box by Melissa Smith. The goal came with 4:18 left on the University Stadium clock.

Tianna Hatch scored the first two Buffalo State goals, in the 43rd and 60th minutes, while goalkeeper Erica Knudsen finished with two saves.

Fredonia freshman midfielder Abigail Price (Naples, N.Y.) had her first two collegiate points -- a goal and an assist -- while junior forward Alexis Moreland (Newfane, N.Y.) scored her seventh goal of the season and added an assist. Blue Devil freshman goalkeeper Kendall Owczarzak (Depew, N.Y.) made three saves.

Buffalo State had a 15-9 advantage in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Bengals improved to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC while Fredonia fell to 2-9 and 0-3. In addition, Buffalo State earned two points in the Battle of Lake Erie series with Fredonia -- with two more points at stake later in the day when the Blue Devils and Bengals meet in men's soccer at 4 p.m. in Buffalo.

Fredonia broke on top 1-0 on the goal by Moreland, the result of a shot off a goal-mouth scramble after a free kick into the box by Ally Tatro (Fairport, N.Y.). Price was also credited with an assist. Hatch's first goal came off a Fredonia turnover and a long run down the right side to forge a 1-1 tie. Her second goal of the game -- which put Buffalo State on top 2-1 -- came on a similar play, only this time a run up the left side.

Price's first collegiate goal was set up by Moreland, who ran along the end line and cross the ball to the middle of the field to Price. Her shot -- and the wet ball -- deflected off Knudsen in the 82nd minute.
