Daniil Medvedev, Camila Giorgi win National Bank Open Singles Titles in Toronto, Montreal

 


Toronto & Montreal -- Russian Daniil Medvedev and Italian Camila Giorgi won the National Bank Open men's and women's singles titles on Sunday in Toronto and Montreal, respectively, as the US Open Series reaches its penultimate week.

 


Medvedev, the world No. 2, defeated 23-year-old

American Reilly Opelka, 6-4, 6-3, to win his 12th career ATP title and add to his success at US Open Series tournaments. The 25-year-old won his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati in 2019 and was named the Series' Breakout Performer before reaching the singles final at the US Open.


 

Giorgi upset sixth-ranked Karolina Pliskova, 6-3, 7-5, to win her third career title and first since 2018. The 29-year-old Italian, who reached the 2018 Wimbledon quarterfinals and has been ranked as high as No. 26, is projected to rise from No. 71 to inside the Top 35.


 

The US Open Series continues this coming week in Cincinnati with the Western & Southern Open ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000, where nine of the women's Top 10 and six of the men's Top 10 feature in the singles draws. Tennis Channel and its streaming service Tennis Channel Plus will have week-long coverage.
