PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher women's basketball team shook off a sluggish first half and pulled away from Utica in the final 20 minutes to cap a 3-0 week with a 75-57 victory on Saturday afternoon at Manning and Napier Varsity Gym.
Senior guards Sidney Tomasso (24 points, 12 rebounds) and Katie Moravec (12 points, 11 rebounds) had double-doubles for the Cardinals, who improved to 8-4
overall (3-0 Empire 8). Utica dropped to 2-10 (0-3 Empire 8) and lost its sixth consecutive game.How It Happened
It took the Cardinals some time to kick their play into gear, as they fell behind by eight points near the end of the first quarter and trailed by six, 22-16, entering the second. The Cardinals shot 8 of 22 overall and missed all eight of their 3-point attempts in the first quarter. Utica shot 60% overall (9 of 15) and 40% from three (2-5).
The Cardinals fared no better for most of the second quarter, as they shot 22.2% overall (4 of 18) and 28.6% from three (2-7). However, they earned chances at the foul line – they made 7 of 8 shots – as Utica's offense cooled off. The Pioneers shot just 5 of 17 (29.4%) in the second quarter, and they turned the ball over six times.
Senior guard Emily McLaughlin gave the Cardinals a jolt at the end of the quarter, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to help put Fisher ahead 33-30. Utica's Hanna Godkin drained a 3-pointer in the final minute to tie the game at 33.
Tomasso, after being limited to six first-half points, scored 11 while shooting 4 of 5 overall (1 of 2 from three) and 2 of 2 from the foul line in the third. The Cardinals led by six, 53-47, entering the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals went on a 16-7 run that lasted nearly seven minutes to take a 15-point lead (69-54) and put the game away in the fourth quarter.
Game Notes
Tomasso, the Empire 8's leading scorer, has had a double-double in back-to-back games. She has four this season and eight in her collegiate career.
The reigning Empire 8 Player of the Year has scored 20 or more points in six of the 11 games in which she's played this season. She has scored at least 16 in all 11 games.
Junior guard Presleigh Brunner scored 14 points while shooting 6 of 12 overall. She has scored 10 or more in six straight contests.
Senior guard Kelly Moravec scored all 10 of her points in the second half.
Katie Moravec recorded her third double-double of the season and led the Cardinals with three steals. She's had at least that many takeaways in five games this season.
The Cardinals made 18 free throws (23 attempts) to Utica's eight (11 attempts).
Fisher has won 22 consecutive games against Utica since 2013.
The Cardinals have beaten all three of their Empire 8 opponents so far this season by 15 or more points.
