Buffalo, NY - The State University of New York at New Paltz swimming team concluded the 2022 SUNYAC Championships Saturday at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center at Erie Community College (ECC) with the women securing a fourth-place team standing and the men earning third.
"I am extremely proud of the way both teams carried themselves this week," said Hawks coach Matthew Distler. "Both teams swam well overall and more importantly, we showed a massive amount of growth as a group from the beginning of the season. We are a very young team and have a bright future ahead of us."
SUNY New Paltz opened up the championships Wednesday in the 800-yard freestyle relay with the team of Ethan Bonney, Brandon Molina, Luke Hoyt and Owen Rowlands placing fourth with a time of 7:12.84 behind Geneseo (6:53.52), Cortland (7:02.73) and Oneonta (7:06.97) who placed first through third, respectively. SUNY New Paltz placed fifth in the same event on the women's side with a time of 8:13.13 with the Knights (7:41.36), Cortland (7:54.39) and Brockport (7:56.23) earning the top three spots in the event.
The following day, the Hawks earned sixth and fourth in the men's and women's 200 freestyle relay, respectively. On the men's side, the team of Steven Macaluso, Venn Engstrom, Korey Barber and Leo Litovsky clocked in at 1:28.56, while the women's team of Kelly Donlevy, Kathryn Kolar, Alex Kassian and Delilah Griger touched the wall in 1:40.08, just behind Cortland's quartet who placed third in 1:39.72.
Bonney placed eighth in the men's 500 freestyle (4:52.14), while Rowlands earned seventh in the 200 individual medley (1:58.70). Kassian clocked in at 2:12.59 in the 200 IM on the women's side, as the freshman placed just behind the Knights' Kenzie Fischer (2:08.34) and Cortland's Madi Monaghan (2:10.39), while shedding a second off her seed time. Later that night, Donlevy secured sixth in the women's 50 freestyle, coming in at 24.88 seconds with day two concluding with the 400-medley relay. SUNY New Paltz placed second on the women's side, as the team of Griger, Kassian, Kirsten Giovanniello and Donlevy clocked in at 4:02.14, only trailing the Knights who touched in a winning time of 3:56.03. The Hawks earned fourth on the men's side, as the quartet of Myles Dower, Rowlands, Macaluso and Barber touched the wall at 3:34.28, just behind Geneseo (3:20.97) who set a new meet record, Oswego (3:30.32) and Cortland (3:33.18).
"There was a ton of standout performances this week," Distler said. "On the men's side, Owen Rowlands, Venn Engstrom, Steven Macaluso, Myles Dower, Ethan Bonney and Korey Barber all had fantastic meets and were huge contributors to our third-place finish. On women's side, Kelly Donlevy , Kirsten Giovanniello, Alex Kassian and Delilah Griger turned in standout individual performances and carried our relays well."
The Hawks had a strong day three with top-three finishes in the men's and women's 200 medley relay and the men's 100 butterfly to help both the men's and women's teams push to third in the team standings heading into Saturday.
The team of Dower, Engstrom, Macaluso and Litovsky came in with a time of 1:35.62, just behind first-place finisher Geneseo whose quartet timed in at 1:34.79, to earn silver. The women also placed second in the same event, as Griger, Kassian, Donlevy and Kolar clocked in with a time of 1:49.42, also only trailing the Knights (1:45.94). Freshman Macaluso took home his first SUNYAC individual medal as he touched third in the 100-butterfly with a time of 51.69. Geneseo placed 1-2 in the event with its top finisher setting a meet record with a time of 49.13 in the event.
Also with good outings on Friday night was Rowlands, who placed fifth in the 400 IM (4:17.35). Donlevy placed fourth in the 100 butterfly (58.95), Barber came in eighth in the 200-freestyle (1:49.21), Kassian secured fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.34), Griger placed seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:02.12), while Dower just missed his chance to get back on the podium, coming in at 53.39 for fourth in the 100 backstroke, just .05 of a second off from third-place finisher from Cortland.
On the final night of the championships, the Hawks took the podium in the women's 200 butterfly, as Giovanniello clocked in at 2:12.90 to earn bronze only behind Geneseo's Alise Hale (2:08.86) and Oswego's Grace Parente (2:12.06).
Bonney placed fourth in the 1,650-freestyle with a time of 16:40.31, while Dower came in fifth in the 200 backstroke (1:57.82) just .60 from the fourth-place finisher. On the women's side in the same event, Griger and Victoria Bogdanski finished seventh and eighth with times of 2:11.91 and 2:17.41, respectively. Engstrom and Macaluso touched back-to-back in the 100-freestyle with times of 48.04 and 48.41 for sixth and seventh place, respectively. Kassian earned sixth in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:31.45, while Barber earned seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:02.05).
The night concluded with the 400-freestyle relay with SUNY New Paltz producing top-five finishes on both the men's and women's sides. Engstrom, Litovsky, Barber and Macaluso helped the Hawks to a fifth place standing, while Kassian, Kathryn Kolar, Julia Iaboni and Donlevy earned fourth in the event with a time of 3:40.20 with Geneseo, Brockport and Cortland finishing just ahead with times of 3:33.67, 3:35.19 and 3:26.91, respectively.
"Our second-place finishes in the 200-medley relay on both the men and women's side was a huge highlight for us, especially because we only graduate one of those eight swimmers," Distler said. "The women's second-place 400 medley was also a great moment for us as well."
