Buffalo Softball scores early in night cap to split with Oswego

BUFFALO, N.Y.— A big first inning in the night cap enabled Buffalo State to split a SUNYAC twin bill Thursday against visiting Oswego, bouncing back from a 5-4 loss in the opening game with a 4-2 victory.

GAME 1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Oswego – 5, Buffalo State – 4
LOCATION:  Softball Field – Buffalo, N.Y.
RECORDS: Oswego (10-7/4-3), Buffalo State (8-11/0-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Laura Crooks (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) went 3 for 4 with an RBI to help lead the Bengals rally in the opener, but Buffalo State could not pull out the victory.
  • Melissa Woods (Lakeview/Frontier) was 2 for 2 with a run scored.
  • Lexi Haley (Rochester/Aquinas) drew the loss, allowing 12 hits and five walks while striking out five.
  • Oswego outhit Buffalo State 12-6 for the game.
  • The Lakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the second.  Buffalo State scored on an error in the third, and Owego added a run in the fifth to push the lead back to three. 
  • The Bengal rallied to even the score at 4-4 with a three-run fifth inning, that included RBIs by Crooks and Chrissy Rennard (Brockport/Brockport), but Oswego took the lead for good with in the sixth, capitalizing on a leadoff walk and a base hit.

FOR THE FOES
  • Brittney Sears earned her fourth win of the season in the circle, scattering six hits and allowing just three earned runs.
  • Ashley Lyman finished 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
  • Tori Travato was 2 for 2 and also had a double and an RBI.

GAME 2 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 4, Oswego - 2
LOCATION:  Softball Field – Buffalo, N.Y
RECORDS: Buffalo State (9-11/1-3), Oswego (10-8/4-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State answered an early Oswego run with four runs in the bottom of the first to chase the Lakers' starting pitcher. 
  • The early burst of offense was enough for Jordan Sarat (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) who earned her first win of the season allowing just five hits with five strikeouts and only gave up one more run in the fourth inning.
  • Julia Blujus (Amherst/Amherst) was 2 for 3 for Buffalo State with an RBI, and Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga/Depew) hit a two-run double.
  • Buffalo State finished with six hits, but just two after the four-run, four-hit first inning.

FOR THE FOES
  • Alexis Nasca finished 2 for 3 with an RBI at the plate for the Lakers, but took the loss in the circle, allowing four hits and four runs in just 2/3 of an inning.
  • Alexandria Connelly went the rest of the way, surrendering just two hits.
