WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Jack Pilgrim
(North Kingstown, R.I.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the
Wells College men's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over Penn College
on Thursday. With the thrilling win in extra time, Wells moves to 7-5
overall and to 4-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The
Wildcats fall to 5-8 overall on the season, moving to 3-4 in league
play.
In the game's 97th minute, the Express pushed the ball up the left side of the field. On the endline, senior Max Cherry
(Ridgewood, N.J.) battled a Penn College defender as he carried the
ball toward the left post. A quick pass to the top of the box from
Cherry caught the foot of Pilgrim, who fired the ball home for his
team's third-straight conference victory.
Wells outshot the Wildcats by a 19-to-6
margin in the contest, posting 11 shots in the second half alone. With
94 seconds remaining in the second half, freshman David Calvache (Islip, N.Y.) nearly sent the Express home with the victory but his shot caromed off the right post.
Express goalkeeper Owen May (Warsaw, N.Y.) earned the shutout, making two saves. Penn College backstop Malcolm Kane turned aside five-of-six shots on frame, collecting the loss for the Wildcats.
Wells returns to action Wednesday, Oct.
14 as they welcome the reigning NEAC champions from Morrisville State
