TEAM USA BRINGS HOME FOUR MEDALS FROM FOUR CONTINENTS


The United States won two medals each in pairs and ice dance, including both golds, at the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2022 in Tallinn, Estonia from Jan. 18-23.

Audrey Lu and Misha Mitrofano and Emily Chan and Spencer How took the top two steps on the podium in pairs with gold and silver, respectively, and in the ice dance competition, Caroline Green and Michael Parson won the gold and Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenk earned the bronze.

Claiming their second straight international title after claiming gold at the Golden Spin of Zagreb, Lu and Mitrofanov kept their momentum going, finishing first in both the short and free skate.

The 2022 U.S. bronze medalists short program to "Toxic" and "Survivor" by 2WEI/TMS Remix included a Level 3 triple twist and a throw triple Lutz. The performance earned 68.35 points, a new personal best at an international competition.

The free skate saw Lu and Mitrofanov score 120.75 points. Skating to "Ancient Lands" by Ronan Hardiman, the duo earned high marks on a Level 4 triple twist and two Level 4 lifts to secure the gold and a total score of 189.10.

After pairing up in 2019, Chan and Howe earned their first international medal, scoring 180.94 points. Coming off the pewter medal at the 2022 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Chan and Howe also secured a career-best score in the short program with 64.47 points thanks to a Level 4 triple twist.

Third after the short program, Chan and Howe moved up to second with a 116.47-point free skate. Set to "Elegy for the Arctic" by Ludovico Einaudi, Chan and Howe earned Level 4 triple twist and a Level 4 lift.

Another pairs team that teamed up in 2019, Katie McBeath and Nathan Bartholoma, finished fifth with a total of 168.18 points. They earned a personal best at an international competition in the short program with 59.54 points before taking 108.64 points in the free skate.

Evelyn Walsh and Trennt Michaud of Canada earned bronze.

In the ice dance event, Green and Parsons had one of the best weekends of their careers, securing new career-best international scores in the rhythm dance, free dance and total score.
With 200.59 total points, Green and Parsons took first in both the rhythm and free dance, earning all positive grades of execution.

Their rhythm dance set to "The Knowledge" and " Rhythm Nation" by Janet Jackson and "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" by En Vogue included Level 4 twizzles and a Level 4 lift for a score of 80.62.

The following day, Green and Parsons ran away with the competition with a free skate that scored 119.97 points. The performance to Violin Concerto No. 1 "EsoConcerto" II by Adagio and "Clouds, The Mind on the (Re)Wind" by Ezio Bosso included two Level 4 lifts for a score of 119.97.

Also standing on the podium in ice dance was Carreira and Ponomarenko. Their rhythm dance to "Batdance" by Prince included Level 4 twizzles as well as a Level 4 spin for a score of 69.35.
The two-time Grand Prix medalists followed up with a free dance, set to "Wicked Game" by Daisy Gray and Yola Recoba, that scored 106.32 points.

The two medals continued a dominant streak for Team USA at Four Continents as the United States has won gold the last four times the competition has been held and has had at least two athletes stand on the podium in both 2020 and 2022 (the competition did not take place in 2021).

The U.S. tandem of Emily Bratti and Ian Somervill took fifth. The team, who paired up in July of 2021, earned 67.72 points in the rhythm dance and 101.82 points in free skate for a total of 169.54.
Kana Muramoto and Daisuke Takahashi of Japan won silver.

In the women's competition, Audrey Shi earned Team USA's best result, securing fourth. The 2020 Guaranteed Rate Skate America bronze medalist crushed her career best international score by more than 20 points, earning new career bests in the short and free skate for a total score of 203.86.

After a short program that included a triple toe loop-triple toe loop combination scored 67.20 points, Shin scored 136.66 points in her free skate. Her highest scoring element was a triple flip-double toe loop-double loop combination during the second half of the routine.

Gabriella Izz and Starr Andrew finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Izzo earned a total of 180.06 points, scoring 63.19 for her short program and 116.87 for her free skate. Andrews, who earned a total score of 173.01 points, started the competition with a 66.10-points short program before scoring 106.41 for her free skate.

Mihara Mai of Japan won gold while Korea's Haein Lee and Yelim Kim claimed silver and bronze.

In the men's competition, Tomoki Hiwatash earned eighth place, Jimmy M took 10th and Camden Pulkine finished 12th.

Tomoki claimed 77.51 points for his short program and 144.86 for his free skate for a total of 222.37. Ma secured 69.98 points for his short program and 145.14 for his free skate, totaling 215.12 points. After scoring 57.58 points for his short program, Pulkinen rebounded to clinch Team USA's best score in the free skate at 146.81 points and finish with 204.39 points overall

Junhwan Cha of Korea won the gold while Kazuki Tomono of Japan and Kao Miura of Japan also stood on the podium, taking silver and bronze, respectively.

Team USA also had five athletes competing at the Bavarian Open this past week.

Competing internationally for the first time, 2021 U.S. junior silver medalist Kanon Smit earned a fourth-place result in the junior women's I event, scoring 48.75 points for her short program and 94.76 for her free skate. Scoring 143.51 points overall, Smith's components score marks were the highest in the competition for both the short program and free skate.

In the junior ice dance event, Elliana Peal and Ethan Pea finished seventh. Their 51.06 points in the rhythm dance and 79.97 points in the free skate were both personal bests at an international competition.

Olivia Ilin and Dylan Cain took a fourth-place result in the advanced novice ice dance event with 105.74 points. They scored 60.26 points in the two pattern dances, taking second place in pattern dance 1, and earned 45.48 points for their free skate.
