Caprio Scores Twice to Lead Field Hockey, 2-1

TROY, N.Y. – Nina Caprio scored twice within 2:10 in the third quarter to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Skidmore College in a Liberty League contest at Harkness Field. The Engineers extended their winning streak to three games and are now 5-6 overall. They are 2-1 in the conference, while the Thoroughbreds fall to 1-2. They are 6-7 overall.

Trailing 1-0 late in the third quarter, Caprio, a

freshman attack, struck twice to turn the score in RPI's favor. Her first of the contest came at 41:15 when she gathered a rebound of a shot, dribbled toward the goal and scored to tie the game.

Her second – and sixth of the season – came off a tip-in of a Lauren Roy centering pass at 43:25.

RPI withstood the fourth quarter pressure of Skidmore, which had six penalty corners and seven shots in the frame. Junior Jen Richardson made four saves and her teammates blocked three attempts in the final 15 minutes.

The Thoroughbreds took the lead with 1:05 left in the first quarter when it scored off sustained pressure following a penalty corner opportunity. Carrie Hughes had a shot off the insertion that was blocked but the ball stayed in the circle with several players swiping at it. Mariah Redler corralled it and slipped a pass to Carolyn Blackman, who scored from just outside the left post.

The visitors held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal and had an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Richardson finished with seven saves, while Jess Gaetgens made five stops on the other end of the field.

RPI is back home, its fourth consecutive in Troy, on Wednesday when it plays area-rival Russell Sage College at 6pm. Skidmore plays next on Friday at the University of Rochester at 2pm.
