Statesmen blank Pioneers 5-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—Nine Statesmen notched a point as the Hobart College soccer team downed Utica 5-0 in a non-conference game played this afternoon on Cozzens Field.
 
The Statesmen improve to 2-3-2 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 1-6-0. Just 9:12 into the match, senior JP White put Hobart on the board, lifting his shot into the left side of the goal after a short pass from first-yearCooper O'Connell. First-year Mike Goulart posted his first goal as a Statesman in the 39th minute. Sophomore Sam Farman blasted a shot the banged off a defender and right to Goulart who finished off the play.
 
Hobart tallied three more goals in the second half. Junior Zach Poretz took a feed from sophomore Derrick Acheampong to make it 3-0 in the 49th minute. Sophomore Mouhamed Diouf notched his first goal of the year, sending home his shot in the 60th minute after a short pass in the box from junior Joseph Escamilla. First-year Tristan Cornell Roberts completed the scoring with his first collegiate goal in the 77th minute. He got the ball just inside the box, made a move around his defender, and capitalized on a one-on-one with the keeper.
 
The Pioneers' best scoring chance came in the 82nd minute. Joseph Hunter broke through for a one-on-one with the Hobart keeper, first-year Brian Salazar, who came in for the final 13:42. Salazar came out to play the ball, but Hunter got around him, however he drilled his shot wide left of the goal.
 
Sophomore Alec Kaminer played the first 76:18 in goal for Hobart and made two saves. Salazar did not face a shot. Austyn Diller played all 90 minutes for Utica and finished with seven saves. The Statesmen held a 19-5 advantage in shots and a 6-2 lead in corners.
 
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when it travels to No. 5 St. Lawrence to open Liberty League play. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
