HAMDEN, Conn. --
With a three-round score of 927, the University at Albany women’s golf
team placed first in the 11-team Quinnipiac Classic. After recording a
313 in the opening round, the Great Danes shot back-to-back 307s in
Monday’s second 18 and Tuesday’s final go-around at New Haven Country
Club.
“I can't tell you how thrilled I am with today's results,” said Head Coach Colleen Cashman-McSween.
“The most important part of the team win was that all five players
contributed at least one very important round for the victory.”
For the second straight match, sophomore Annie Songeun Lee placed first overall with a 226
(76-75-75), playing consistently throughout the tournament. Junior Paige Fujihara
followed with a third-place finish in the field consisting of 57
competitors. With a 228 (80-72-76), Fujihara’s second-round 72 marked a
career-best performance.
Senior Yoorim Kang rounded out UAlbany’s top-10 finishers, tying for eighth with a 232 (76-81-85), while junior Nicolette Darois (81-79-87--247) and Rosie Hearns (85-83-81--249) placed 30th and 34th, respectively.
“The course was great but the greens were gigantic,” said
Cashman-McSween. “I told the team from the start it was going to be a
putting contest and ultimately we needed to eliminate the big numbers.
We started off slow, but went two-under-par as a team on the first three
holes of the back nine and it gave us confidence to finish it out.”
Heading into the final round two strokes back from first-place Sacred
Heart, the Great Danes rallied to overcome the Pioneers (931), and also
finished in front of Central Connecticut State (934), Quinnipiac (943),
Monmouth (944), Hartford (955), Hofstra (962), Fairfield (998), Delaware
State (1,000), Quinnipiac B (1,012), and St. Francis (1,082).
The Great Danes close out the 2015 fall season, competing at the
Delaware Lady Blue Hen Invitational at Rehoboth Country Club, Oct.
24-25.
