Lady Mavericks Record Historic Victory at Pitt-Bradford

Sophomore Cho Thiri Tun helped the Lady Mavs win their third AMCC match for the first time in program history

Medaille defeats the Panthers for the first time in program history

BRADFORD, PA - The Medaille College Women's Tennis program had never beaten the Panthers of Pitt-Bradford. The Lady Mavericks also had never won three AMCC matches in the same season. On Thursday afternoon, Medaille killed two birds with one stone; defeating the Panthers (6-3) on a historic day for the program.

As with all collegiate tennis matches, Wednesday started with three doubles competitions. The Lady Mavs couldn't have asked for a better start than the one they got, sweeping the Panthers in all three doubles matches.

It began with junior captain Liz Barrett (Sanborn, NY, Niagara-Wheatfield) and her number one doubles partner freshman Colleen Voigt (Marion, NY, Marion). They defeated the Pitt-Greensburg pairing of Alexa Holleran and Emily Fowkes (8-4) to put Medaille up (1-0). After that, sophomore Samantha Dworzanski (North Tonawanda, NY, Niagara Wheatfield) and senior Emily Insinna (Alden, NY, Alden) gave the Lady Mavs a (2-0) lead by taking down Pitt-Bradford's number two pairing (9-7).

Sophomore Cho Thiri Tun (Mae Sot, Thailand, Riverside) and junior Alida Tabaro (Nairobi, Kenya, Buffalo Seminary) completed the doubles sweep by beating Kayla Kerner and Myeasha Williams (8-0) to put the Lady Mavericks up (3-0) heading into singles play.

In singles number one, Barrett once again faced-off against Holleran. In a very tightly contested match, Barrett came out on top for the second time, beating Holleran (6-3, 3-6, 6-2).

However, Barrett wasn't the only Lady Mav to come away from the match unblemished. Insinna defeated Isla Swindles (6-1, 6-0) in number three singles; while Tun beat Williams for the second time (6-2, 6-2).

The win was monumental for Medaille, as it pulled the Lady Mavericks within striking distance of fifth and sixth place in the AMCC standings. The top six teams advance to the AMCC playoffs, something that the Lady Mavs hope to accomplish for the first time in program history.

Medaille will be back on the court Saturday afternoon, when they host Fredonia State on Senior Day at the Miller Tennis Courts. The match is scheduled to start at 12:00pm.
