Musician Spotlight: Violinist Lindsey Stirling

From the city of Los Angeles, California comes a amazing breakthrough artist by the name of Lindsey Stirling, Lindsey Stirling is one of the biggest artist development breakthrough stories in recent years. A classically trained violinist from Gilbert, AZ, Lindsey has entered a futurist world of electronic big beats and animation, leaping through the music industry with over half a billion views on YouTube, Billboard chart-topping hits and sold out tours worldwide.

Lindsey’s self-titled debut album featured twelve original tracks; including the viral smash “Crystallize,” which has racked up over 90 million YouTube views. The album has sold over 300,000 copies in the US without the backing of a major label, and has gone platinum in Germany and gold in Poland and Switzerland. The album reached number one on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Chart and the Billboard Classical Album Chart and also peaked at #23 on the Billboard Top 200.

We recently had the opportunity to interview her sister on Lindsey's music and if she is passionate
about an charities.

When did you start performing?
Lindsey started playing violin at 6 years old.  She performed for recitals and some church events.  When she was in high school she joined a band called "Stomp on Melvin."  During her senior year of high school she won the talent competition for "America's Junior Miss" pageant and that experience in particular gave her an intense desire to perform for a living.

Was it your dream to be a performer?
Lindsey always loved attention ;)  I think a part of her always wanted to grow up and "shine" on stage, but it wasn't anything she took particularly seriously (other than a hobby) until after America's Got Talent.  Participating and making it to the top 48 gave her hope that she could actually do it, and succeed.  And I think that as devastating and dehumanizing as it was being kicked from the show, it gave her the motivation to prove the judges on the show wrong.

Tell us about your style of music?
Electronic, dubstep, classical crossover, self-composed with collaborative producer tracks.  Lindsey also enjoys doing occasional covers and gaming music to please her "gamer" fans.

Are there challenges pursuing a music career?
Of course.  Lindsey loves the busy life of a musician.  She loves the non-stop moving from place to place and high energy of performing daily.  One of the challenges she has expressed is being able to keep in touch with family and friends, or make new ones who don't just see her as a famous performer...but see the real "her," if that makes any sense.  She takes the time to keep herself "grounded" through prayer, scripture study, and taking time to express appreciation and do service for others.

Do your parents and friends support you?
Absolutely.  Lindsey has an amazingly supportive family, and her friends are all very proud of her.  When she needs us, we're there.  When she doesn't need us, we're sometimes there too lol

Do you write your own songs?
Lindsey composes all of her own solo lines, with the exception of the collaborations she has done with Pentatonix.

If so, tell us what goes into writing a great song?
Lindsey often takes days or weeks after receiving a backtrack to compose something she is happy with.  She doodles, she improvises, and keeps experimenting until she comes up with something that works/she loves enough to produce.

Where was your first performance, were you excited?
Lindsey's first recital was at her teacher's house, and yes she was tickled to death.

How do you prepare for a performance?
Lindsey eats a lot of fruit backstage.  She listens to music, warms up on her violin, prays, and often listens to inspiring music that gets her "pumped up."

If I went to one of your concerts, what can fans and I expect?
Hopefully a huge crowd, several LCD screens, amazing lighting, lazer lights, several different costume changes, cool props, and amazing music

Where have you been able to perform?
Lindsey has performed all over the world.  The only main places she hasn't performed is South America (with the exception of Mexico), Africa (with the exception of her visit to Kenya https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g9poWKKpbU ) and the Arctic.

What is it like being on tour?
Sleep, eat, exercise, laugh, set up, meet fans, perform, repeat.  Lindsey loves being on tour.

Who inspires you with your singing and songwriting?
Lindsey takes inspiration from the people and events of her life; her struggles, her passions, her desires, and her love of God.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Lindsey said she would love to return to Australia because she said the food was so good.

Along the same line, who would you love to perform with?
David Guetta, Ellie Goulding, Avril Lavinge, Hailey Williams, David Garrett

What do you hope to accomplish with your music?
Lindsey wants to share her music with as many people as possible.  We recently went to a Katie Perry concert together and she said, "I wonder what it's like to be her."  I told her, "Probably a lot what it feels like to be you...just a little bigger."  Lindsey would love to play for stadiums someday.  She has also expressed that one of her ultimate goals is to win a grammy.

What three words best describe you and your music?
spunky, high-energy, full of emotion

Do you have any advice for those wanting to start a career in singing and songwriting?
First and foremost, don't ever let anyone tell you you can't, or allow the world to define your worth or what your standards should be.  If you have to loose yourself to become a famous musician, the most important thing you have is lost.  There's no point in that nor will it ever make you truly happy.  Drew, Gavi, and Lindsey go over some things in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IM6vifMiY-Y

Do you have any other talents?
Lindsey is a really good designer (costumes), she sews, she enjoys scrapbooking, she has a great sense of humor, she can get an incredible amount of work done in very little time, she is a fantastic public speaker/motivational speaker, and she is amazing at collaborating with other people and ideas to get results.  She's very artistic minded and knows what she wants.  She is the creative mind behind all of her videos and music.

Are you passionate about any charities, if so, why?
Lindsey has been very passionate about trying to help young people interested in music have that opportunity to learn and instrument and participate in school programs.  With all of the budget cuts, music is usually the first thing to go.  Lindsey feels that music and art is a critical part of education that should be the last thing on the list to cut, and would like to advocate for keeping music and the arts as a core part of education.

Is education important to you?
Absolutely.  Do what you love.  Learn all that you can, whatever form that takes.
