Purchase Softball Improves to 10-2 in Sweep of Brooklyn

Purchase, NY – Undeterred by the uncharacteristically cold spring temperatures Wednesday afternoon, Purchase softball managed to stay perfect at home and push their record to 10-2 on the season – matching last spring's win total – in a doubleheader sweep of non-conference rival, Brooklyn College.

The Panthers took the opener 8-1 in seven innings and closed the twin bill sweep in a 10-0, five-inning final in game two.

In the first game, Purchase scored one in the first on a Kelly Hayes (FR/Staten Island, NY) RBI single before adding three runs in the third, highlighted by an RBI groundout following a bases loaded error. The Panthers then increased their lead on an RBI groundout by Nicole Fortuna (JR/New Rochelle, NY) and an RBI single in the fourth by Lisa Kentris (FR/Latham, NY). Tara Stiansen (SR/Hampton Bays, NY) followed with a triple, plating Kentris for a commanding 7-1 lead.

A passed ball in the fifth brought home Purchase's final run. Kentris led the charge offensively, going
4-for-4 with three runs and one RBI in the first game, while teammates Hayes and Stainsen added two hits apiece. The trio accounted for eight of the team's 10 hits.

That offense was more than enough for starter Samantha Alonzo (SR/Wappingers Falls, NY). She improved to 4-1, striking out 10 over seven innings. Alonzo allowed one hit on the day.

Brooklyn starter Uena Xharo, who would also take the game-two loss, allowed five earned runs over six innings.

In game two, Fortuna improved to 6-0 in the circle, striking out four over five innings.

The offense backed her with four, first-inning runs, highlighted by two runs coming across via errors before Hayes doubled and plated Briana Leon (JR/Glen Cove, NY). Shortly after, Shannon Clancy (SO/Babylon, NY) followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Hayes.

In the second, Kentris' sac fly made it 5-0. Clancy would then single home two runs for a 7-0 lead. The Panthers capped the scoring with a single run in the third (April Uhl (JR/Jackson Heights, NY) reached on an error, scoring Clancy) and a double from Mary Adams (JR/Milton, PA) that scored two in the fourth.

Hayes and Adams paced the club in game two with two hits apiece, while Clancy recorded three of the team's 10 runs on three RBI.

Brooklyn (0-8) was also limited to one hit in game two.

The red-hot Panthers, who will be featured on News 12 Westchester, are back in action Friday at home against Sarah Lawrence. The twin bill Friday reopens conference play.

Purchase is 10-0 at home this season.
