 'Chasing the Cure' Series Begins Sunday, as Nation Marks 50th Anniversary of ‘National Cancer Act’

Dec. 10, 2021 - NBC News and MSNBC will air a week-long series featuring reporting on the latest advances in early detection and cancer treatment as the nation marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the National Cancer Act. Beginning Sunday, Chasing the Cure will air across TODAY, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, MSNBC, NBCNews.com and NBC News NOW.

On NBC Nightly News, NBC News senior national correspondent Kate Snow will

report on a new blood test that cancer experts claim may be the next major breakthrough in detecting the disease. The broadcast exclusive report, which airs Wednesday, Dec. 15, will feature an inside look at the test that can detect more than 50 types of cancer in one blood draw.

On TODAY, NBC News’ Craig Melvin will report on Thursday Dec. 16th on a new mRNA vaccine for colorectal cancer. NBC News will have an exclusive look at the clinical trial underway, as well as exclusive access inside the vaccine manufacturing facility in Germany. 

The special series will also explore a new multi-million dollar investment to help treat childhood cancer in countries across the world; the pandemic’s impact on cancer research; how intense physical activity like high intensity interval exercise (HIIT) is being used to treat cancer; America’s successes and challenges since the signing of the National Cancer Act; and stories of cancer survivors defying the odds and giving back to their communities.  

NBC News and MSNBC correspondents Morgan Radford, Harry Smith, Dr. John Torres and more will contribute to the series.
