Hobart falls in Liberty League semifinals

ITHACA, N.Y.-The Hobart College tennis team dropped a Liberty League Tournament semifinal match 5-0 to top-ranked Skidmore this afternoon at the Reis Tennis Center at Cornell University. The Statesmen complete the 2015-16 season with a 9-9 overall record.

The Thoroughbreds, who are ranked 20th in the nation and seventh in the Northeast by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, are now 13-4. Skidmore will play the winner of the second semifinal, No. 2 St. Lawrence and No. 3 Rensselaer, tomorrow.

The Thoroughbreds took an early lead in the match after sweeping doubles play. Juniors Michael Rusk and Danny Kot kept their match close at No. 2 but fell to Kit Sanderson and Jonah Epstein 8-6. Skidmore won 8-3 at No. 1 and 8-5 at No. 3. The Thoroughbreds clinched the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles.

Hobart first-year Jonah Salita dropped the first set to Kai Yuen Leung, but was leading 5-3 in the second set when the match was called because Skidmore had already clinched the overall victory. Rusk was also leading in the second set when the match was called.

The Statesmen do not graduate any seniors.
