Varsity Wins Annual Alumni Game

The Syracuse Varsity scored the first six goals of the game and held off a late rally to defeat the Alumni All-Stars, 11-9, in the sixth annual Orange Alumni Classic on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Carrier Dome. Nine different players recorded goals for the current team as it posted its sixth consecutive victory in the event.

Pat Carlin started the scoring with a goal 53 seconds into the game on an assist from Jordan Evans.  Evans then found the back of the net before Tyler Ford scored to give the Varsity squad a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.

The Orange scoring streak continued in the second quarter as Sergio Salcido, Dylan Donahue and
Ryan Simmons all recorded goals to put the current team up 6-0 with 1:58 in the half. However, the Alumni scored three times in the final 1:13 to cut the lead to 6-3 at halftime. Tom Hardy put the Alumni on the board with 1:13 on the clock before Tommy Palasek scored on an assist from Billy Ward. Hardy recorded the final goal of the half with nine seconds remaining.

The teams traded goals in the third quarter as the Orange entered the final quarter with a 9-6 lead. Randy Staats scored twice during the third quarter to keep the Alumni within striking distance.

Palasek sparked the Alumni comeback, which evened the score at 9-9. He assisted on goals by Josh Amidon and Hardy and then tallied his second goal of the day on an assist from Hakeem Lecky to tie the score with 6:10 remaining.

The Varsity squad pulled ahead for good when Devin Shewell netted back-to-back goals in the final 3:51, both on assists by Bradley Voight, to record the 11-9 victory.

Donahue also recorded two goals for the current squad, while Evans finished with a goal and an assist. Warren Hill started in goal and posted eight saves, while Dominick Madonna had seven, all in the fourth quarter.

Palasek finished with five points (2g, 3a) to lead the Alumni. Hardy had three goals, while Staats finished with two.

The Orange concludes its fall schedule next weekend when it takes on Navy and Towson in Annapolis, Md.
