Alfred, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's tennis team took down Alfred
University 7-2 on Sunday afternoon, marking the first time in program
history the team has defeated the Saxons. With the win, Oswego finishes a
perfect 3-0 in the fall season. Alfred University moves to 0-2 on the
season.
Oswego got things rolling quickly, scooping up to points
in doubles. Soeren Wittland and Ariel Kovesi defeated their opponents at
third 8-2, while Alex McCarthy and Sam Mcgrath were victorious at first by the same score.
The
squad carried its momentum into singles as Oswego took five of the
possible six matches. Mcgrath took second 6-0, 6-3 while on the court
next to him Kovesi downed his opponent 6-0, 6-1 at third. Ryan Korn played a close first set, eventually winning 6-4 before turning his play up and taking the second set 6-2. Jon Matros (fifth) and John Stanford (sixth) earned Oswego's final two points winning 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-4, respectively.
This
game marked the end of the Lakers fall n on traditional season and the
team will pick up play again on March 4 with a match against D'Youville
College at home.
