Vassar Tripped Up At Maritime

Recap, photo courtesy of Vassar College
BRONX, N.Y. – The Vassar men's lacrosse team was outscored 5-1 in the first half, and despite a late push, could not overcome the early deficit. The Brewers scored three unanswered goal in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell 8-5 to the Privateers on Wednesday evening. Senior James Thomas (Manhasset, NY) led Vassar with two goals, while sophomore Tomas Meade (Corvallis, OR) tallied a goal and an assist.

Maritime has won its fourth game in a row and moves to 4-1, while the Brewers slip to 2-3.

The Privateers got on the board 36 seconds after the opening faceoff and then scored twice more in the first quarter to go up 3-0 at 5:58. Thomas netted his first goal at 2:06, but the Brewers were held scoreless until the third afterward. Maritime notched four-straight from 13:08 in the second to 12:08 in the third to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Freshman Connor Deehan (Westwood, MA) finally sparked the Brewers when he netted the unassisted goal at 6:20.

Down 8-2 heading into the fourth, a Vassar come back looked challenging. Meade found Thomas early in the quarter to cut the lead to five, and then Dekker Stebel (San Diego, CA) made it an 8-4 game at 4:45. Meade was the final score off a Spencer Duryee (Whitehouse Station, NJ) assist.

Matthew Lowery (Bel Air, MD) won 11-of-17 faceoffs and scooped up a team-high eight groundballs. Cooper Vorel (Boonton Township, NJ) led the defense with two caused turnovers and also had three groundballs.

The Privateers' Matt DeMeo led all scorers with four goals and two assists.

Senior Matt Boyd (Essex Fells, NJ) started in goal and recorded 10 saves. Maritime's Justin Weigold had 12.

Vassar now begins their spring break trip to Florida. The first match will be against Liberty League foe St. Lawrence on Saturday in Tampa. Game is set to start at 4:30 p.m.

Four-Run Eighth Propels Vassar Past Plymouth State

Recap, photo courtesy of Vassar College
FORT MYERS, FL — The Vassar College baseball team (3-2) scored four runs in the eighth to overcome a 10-9 deficit and notch a 13-10 victory over Plymouth State (3-3) at Terry Park in the Brewers' final game of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Tuesday morning.

Vassar scored twice in the top of the first, but Plymouth State put up a seven-spot in the bottom half of the inning.  The Brewers immediately countered with three runs in the top of the second, though, to pull within 7-5.  Eric Trausch (San Diego, CA) ripped a two-run single with the bases loaded and two out before Taylor Smach (Manlius, NY) followed with an RBI single.  Bryan Rubin (Bryn Mawr, PA) then made it 7-6 with a homer to right center in the third.

Plymouth State added another run in the fourth, but Connor Levchuck (Greenlawn, NY) tied the game with a two-run double in the fifth.  After the Panthers regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, Vassar pulled within 10-9 when Matt Martino (Hauppauge, NY) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.

Martino and Trausch each singled to start the eighth.  Smach was up next, and he roped a double down the left field line to knock in both runs and give Vassar the lead.  The Brewers picked up a pair of insurance tallies on a two-out error.

Patrick Fitzgerald (Phoenix, MD) then slammed the door on Plymouth State, getting a double play with the tying run at the plate in the eighth, and another after a leadoff single in the ninth to earn the save.  Alex Hartnett (1-0) (Miami, FL) was credited with the win after striking out two while not allowing a hit in two scoreless innings.

"Today was a huge win four our team going into a two-day break here in Florida," Head Coach Matthew Righter said.  "Our hitters responded extremely well after yesterday's performance and our bullpen kept us in the game until the very end.  The keys to today's game were definitely mental toughness and clutch hitting.  Those are two things we talked about quite a bit after the Baruch game, and I thought our guys delivered."

Smach finished 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored.  Matt McGannon (Redding, CT) was 3-for-6 with two runs scored, and Martino also scored twice.  Rubin also scored twice, while Trausch and Levchuck both collected two RBIs.

For Plymouth State, Jimmy Zimolka went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.  Three different Panthers scored twice, while Ryan Boldwin and James Salta both drove in a pair of runs.  Alex Larson (0-1) took the loss on the mound.

After beginning their Florida trip with five games in four days, the Brewers are off until Friday, when they take on North Central (3-0) at 5:30 p.m.  It will be Vassar's first contest at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte.

Baseball Drops 5-1 Decision

Recap, photo courtesy of Vassar College
FORT MYERS, FL- Despite six hits on the day, the Vassar College baseball team dropped a tough 5-1 decision Monday morning to the Baruch College Bearcats.

In the nine-inning game, 17 Brewers saw the field with three pitching changes. Yet, Jake Silver (Wellington, FL) was credited with the loss.

The Brewers and the Bearcats were scoreless through the first three innings, but Vassar got on the board first in the top of the fourth, off a Connor Levchuck (Greenlawn, NY) walk forcing Matt Schwartz (Dix Hills, NY) home. The Brewers ended that inning with three runners left on base.

However, Baruch took advantage of their next at bat and secured two RBIs; a hit to left field and a single.

Trailing 3-1, in the top half of the seventh, Vassar had its best chance to level the game as Cameron Skudin (Melville, NY) and Sam Brinster (Long Beach, NY) were walked and Matt McGannon (Redding, CT) connected with a single. Though three straight fielding outs ended the half inning.

The Bearcats would maintain their lead and add two more to the scoreboard in the bottom seventh and eighth.

Jesse Mulham (Syosset, NY), Brent Shimoda (Aiea, HI), Elliot Layne (Los Angeles, CA), Daniel Bonfiglio (New York, NY), Skudin, and McGannon all registered one hit.

Softball Takes Two at La Verne

Recap, photo courtesy of Ithaca College
LA VERNE, Calif. – The Ithaca College softball team completed the sweep of La Verne on Thursday afternoon with a 6-5 win in game one and an 8-0, five-inning game two victory.

Win the win, the Bombers are now 5-1 on the season with four games left of the spring break trip to California.

Game 1 | Ithaca 6, La Verne 5

La Verne got on the board first when Katheryn Navarro sent a solo shot over the fence to take a 1-0 lead.

After two and one-half scoreless innings, the Bombers took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. First-year Daniella Mulvey started things off for Ithaca with a single right field before senior Annie Cooney drilled a two-run homer to put IC up 2-1.

The Leopards answered back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, 2-2. Mikayla Mendoza led off with a double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She was ultimately driven in by a Carly Condon sacrifice fly to right field.

La Verna put together a two-run bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead over Ithaca. Navarro led off with a single up the middle and headed to third on a Justice Borden sacrifice bunt. Gabriella Underwood drove in Navarro for the first run of the inning before scoring on a Mendoza trip to right.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Bombers put up a huge seventh inning. Vanessa Brown started things off with a single before Gabby Laccona sent a shot to left field. Abby Shields then drew a walk to load the bases and Mulvey blasted a grand slam to bring all runners in and give Ithaca a 6-4 advantage.

La Verne put another run on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning, starting with a Shelby Tevis walk. Tevis advanced to second on a Mendoza single and scored on an error. The Bombers forced the final two outs to preserve the lead and take the win.

Mulvey finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored while Cooney went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Emily Holden picked up her first win of the year after coming on to pitch three innings of relief.

Game 2 | Ithaca 8, La Verne 0

The Bombers came out firing on all cylinders in the second game of the day to score seven runs in the first inning.

Brown led off with a single before stealing second to put herself in scoring position. Laccona ripped a single up the middle to score Brown before headed to second on an Alex Wright single.

Sophomore Haley White followed that up with a single and advanced on an error, allowing Laccona and Wright to score and take a 3-0 lead.

Both Cooney and Ellie Murray drew walks before Alex Kimmel drove in White and moved the runners up a base. Cooney and Murray both scored on a Nikkey Skuraton bunt and a fielding error.

A Laccona single to left field pushed Skuraton across home plate and gave the Bombers a 7-0 advantage.

Ithaca put up another run in the top of the fifth inning after three and one-half scoreless innings. Cooney blasted her second home run of the day to put IC up 8-0, which ultimately forced the end of the game in the fifth inning.

Both Laccona and White finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored while Cooney went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Fleming earned her second win of the season, striking out four in five innings of work.

No. 1 Gettysburg Tops No. 19 Women’s Lacrosse in Neutral-Site Clash

Recap, photo courtesy of Ithaca College
SPARKS, Md. – The 19th-ranked Ithaca College women's lacrosse was back in action on Thursday afternoon looking to score another big non-league result when it clashed with two-time defending champion No. 1 Gettysburg in a neutral-site contest at the United States Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland. Unfortunately, the Bombers were unable to sustain the momentum from their big road win over then-No. 20 Scranton over the weekend, as Gettysburg pulled away in a 20-9 result at the historic Tierney Stadium. The loss evens Ithaca's record at 2-2 during the early part of this season.

Ultimately, the contest boiled down to two significant areas, as Gettysburg held decisive advantages in draw controls and free-position chances that proved to be the biggest differentiator between the two sides. The Bullets dominated the draw all day, which established a big edge in offensive zone time. Gettysburg out-paced Ithaca 19-to-3 in the draw during the opening half and finished the contest with a 24-to-6 edge in the crucial statistic. The Bullets finishing was also clinical against IC's sophomore keeper Mackenzie Schade, who definitely was facing the most dynamic attacking group of her young collegiate career. Gettysburg scored on 20-of-25 shots on goal in the game, many of which came from point-blank opportunities through deft passing or free-position chances.

It was an energetic start to the game for both sides, as the Bombers and Bullets took to the field turf

Mathias Leads Hawks to Win, Two Rookies Earn HatTricks Against Elmira

Recap, photo courtesy of Hilbert College
ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Hilbert men's lacrosse team returned to action tonight and picked up a 14-5 non-conference victory over Elmira College (0-3) under the lights at Notre Dame High School.

Edward Mathias led the Hilbert charge on offense as he manufactured eight points behind five assists / three goals, and James Duffy added five points as did Drew Werner.

A pair of first-year players notched hat tricks as the Hawks dominated the offensive end, outshooting Elmira 55-29.

Elijah Ryan earned his first win in goal this spring, making seven saves (4 goals) in 53:46 minutes of action.

Freshman Brandon Bitka was the first of three to reach a hat trick, scoring all three goals over a 15-minute span in the first half and Drew Werner quickly tallied his trifecta spaced over 11 minutes in the second half.  Mathias did his work all game but earned the hat trick in the second half.

Hilbert jumped out to a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes and added one more marker in the second quarter.

Anthony Cappola put Hilbert on the scoreboard first less than 120 seconds into the game.   Bitka then found his touch by earning points every other stat line.  The rookie tossed his first collegiate goal in at 12:05, ahead of James Duffy's 7:42 score.

Bitka scored two more times, one at 3:32, prior to the Soaring Eagles first goal with just five seconds left in the opening quarter. Bitka almost matched his first quarter goal time with his third of the day at 12:10 in the second session.

The Hawks out-shot the Soaring Eagles 21-14 (14-6 on goal) and led 5-2 by intermission.

Elmira picked up their pace after the break (out shooting Hilbert 11-10 in the 3rd quarter) and worked hard to catch up to the Hawks as they converted another score at 8:36.

But Drew Werner's goal almost four minutes later took the wind out of the Soaring Eagles wings and lifted Hilbert 6-3 with a man-up goal.  Mathias tallied his first point after feeding his teammates non-stop in the first half and gave Hilbert a 7-3 advantage heading into the final period.

Matthew Toro marked the board at 13:54 and just 54 seconds later, Werner tallied his second of the day.

Elmira added what turned out to be their final score late in the 10th minute before Werner joined Bitka scoring his man up trifecta.

The Hawks dominated the field and ran away with a 7-2 final quarter scoring effort.

By the final horn, Hilbert outshot the hosts, 55-29, won 17 of 22 face offs and worked for a 55-41 advantage in ground balls.

Elmira scored two (of 5) man-up goals while the Hawks picked the Soaring Eagles for four extra man scores, all in the second half.

Hilbert (1-1) returns to action Wednesday, March 20 with a 4pm face off against Thiel College at Eden Jr/Sr High School.  This is a make-up game from March 2nd.

NYU - 8, Farmingdale State - 7

Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team traveled to non-conference opponent New York University last night and fell, 8-7. FSC trailed 8-0 heading into the ninth inning and scored seven runs to cut their deficit to just one, but were unable to push across another run as NYU held on for the win. The Rams dropped to 2-1 with the loss, while the Violets improved to a perfect 5-0 overall.

NYU opened the scoring in the first inning as senior center fielder Jake Walter (Lubbock, TX) led off with a single and later came around to score on a two-run homerun by freshman shortstop Zane Baker (Bellevue, WA).

Neither team would score until the bottom of the fifth inning when a hit-by-pitch forced in a run to give the Violets a 3-0 advantage.

NYU led 5-0 in the seventh and used a three-run triple by Walter to go in front, 8-0.

In the top of the ninth inning, Farmingdale State loaded the bases on a fielder's choice, a walk and a hit-by-pitch before freshman left fielder Patrick Leach (Rockville, Centre, N.Y.) hit a grand slam to left field to cut the deficit to 8-4. After NYU forced a flyout for the second out of the inning, junior shortstop Brian Perez (Levittown, N.Y.) hit a single to second base and junior designated hitter Vincent Rice (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) walked. The next batter, junior right fielder Vincent Napolitano (Bellmore, N.Y.), tallied a three-run homerun to left-center to close within just one, 8-7. Violets' sophomore relief pitcher Joseph Prisco (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) would force Rams' pinch-hitter Jimmy Mattera (West Islip, N.Y.) to ground out to third to end the game and secure the victory, 8-7.

Leach was 2-for-5 with four runs batted in on his grand slam, while Perez tallied two hits and one run scored. Napolitano had three RBI's and one run scored and senior third baseman Jason Conti (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) was 1-for-4 with a double. FSC junior Nicholas Rooney (Ridge, N.Y.) pitched 4.1 innings in relief and allowed just three hits, while striking out four.

For NYU, Walter was 3-for-5 with three RBI's and one run scored. Junior Sal Cammisuli (Jericho, N.Y.) (1-0) earned the win, pitching 6.1 scoreless innings.

The Rams next head down to Kissimmee, Florida for the RussMatt Invitational from March 14th-21st. The Rams first will play University of Massachusetts Boston on Friday, March 15th at 11:30 a.m.

ORANGE, Calif. – The Ithaca College baseball team dropped to 2-2 on the season after an 11-1 loss to nationally ranked No. 10 Chapman University at W.O. Hart Park on Tuesday evening. Chapman scored nine runs over the final three home innings to improve to 11-3 on the year.

The Bombers had an opportunity to take an early lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Garrett Callaghan led off with a walk but was retired on a fielder's choice off the bat of senior Webb Little. Two batters later, senior Sam Little notched a base hit to put two runners on with two outs, but the potential rally came to an end with a strikeout.

Ithaca then fell behind Chapman, 2-0, after the second inning. A one-out single came all the way around to score on a double, and after a hit by pitch and stolen base, an IC error allowed the second run of the inning to come home.

Over the next two innings, neither team was able to produce a hit until a single by Callaghan drove in

No. 22 Women’s Lacrosse Tops No. 20 Scranton 12-10 in Spring Break Opener

SCRANTON, Pa. – The 22nd-ranked Ithaca College women's lacrosse team was back in action on Sunday afternoon when it kicked off Spring Break week with the first of two nationally-ranked matchups on the road at No. 20 University of Scranton. Coming off a disappointing contest that saw a late lead slip away in an 11-8 defeat to 15th-ranked SUNY Cortland, Sunday represented another opportunity for Ithaca to pick up a quality non-league win to its early-season resume. The Bombers did just that, edging the previously undefeated 20th-ranked Royals in a back-and-forth 12-10 thriller. The win improves IC's record to 2-1 on the year.

Picking up victories over nationally-ranked foes had been an elusive task for IC dating back to last season. Despite amassing 14 wins during the year a season ago, it was that lack of true "resume" wins that ultimately left the Bombers on the outside looking in to the 2018 NCAA Tournament. With a second chance to secure a true statement win against a Scranton team that entered the day with an impressive 4-0 record to start to the season, the Bombers did not blink on the road against the challenging foe. Rediscovering their attacking rhythm, the Bombers blitzed the Royals for 12 goals, while it put the clamps on Scranton's dynamic attack in holding the Royals to a season-low 10-goal output.

It was junior attacker, Bailey Herr, that again paced the Bombers offensively on the afternoon. She
