HER NAME IS BAO BAO!

GIANT PANDA CUB RECEIVED HER NAME DURING CEREMONY MARKING FIRST 100 DAYS
Washington D.C - After 100 days and 123,039 votes the giant panda cub at the Smithsonian's National Zoo received her name Bao Bao on Sunday, Dec. 1. Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough, Ambassador Cui Tiankai from the People's Republic of China and Assistant Secretary Kerri-Ann Jones from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs revealed her name at a ceremony celebrating the cub's first 100 days of life. Bao Bao translates as precious or treasure in English. It was one of five Mandarin Chinese names that were offered for a public online vote from Nov. 5 to Nov. 22. The names were contributed by People's Republic of China ambassador to the U.S., Cui Tiankai, U.S. ambassador to the People's Republic of China, Gary Locke and his family, giant panda keepers at the China Conservation and Research Center in Wolong, Sichuan, China, where the cub will live after she turns 4 years old, giant panda keepers at the National Zoo, and Friends of the National Zoo.

"When this cub was born last summer, I was thrilled," said Dennis Kelly, director of the Smithsonian's National Zoo. "It was a great moment for the National Zoo. Bao Bao symbolizes 41 years of research and collaboration both at the National Zoo and in China. We're grateful to everyone around the world who voted to name her and help us celebrate today."

The ceremony also included special video messages from First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, and First Lady of the People's Republic of China, Peng Liyuan. Both congratulated the National Zoo on the successful birth of the cub and reflected on 41 years of giant panda conservation success as a result of excellent collaboration between the United States and China. The National Zoo received a state gift of two pandas in 1972 following the seminal state visit by President Richard M. Nixon and Mrs. Nixon.

The day's festivities concluded at the David M. Rubenstein Family Giant Panda Habitat. Chinese lion dancers led guests to the giant panda yards where Tian Tian (t-YEN t-YEN), the cub's father, received a frozen treat.

Mei Xiang (may-SHONG) gave birth to Bao Bao Aug. 23, 2013. Her birth was broadcast live on the panda cams, sponsored by the Ford Motor Company Fund. She will make her public debut in early 2014.

RAISING BABIES BY HAND
Sometimes, animal parents aren't up to the job. Then a hand-rearing team steps in.

Newborns at the Zoo may look cute and cuddly, but many have razor-sharp claws, fierce fangs, and tricky temperaments. And some of the moms may neglect or even kill their babies rather than nurse or care for them. That’s when Zoo experts with some real hands-on experience step in.

Some of the Zoo’s infants must be “pulled,” or taken away from their mother after birth, to survive. A new mother may not always harm a newborn, but often she simply cannot provide what it needs. The specialized staff who care for the Zoo’s babies have paved the way in raising exotic birds from Africa and New Zealand, clouded leopards and red pandas from Asia, and even one prickly little South American porcupine.

Hand-rearing an animal infant is akin to the initial weeks of caring for a human baby. Some days are joyful; others are filled with fear and worry. Feeding routines can be erratic. There are too many sleepless nights to count.

Porcupine Problems

Dell Guglielmo, a keeper from the Small Mammal House, knows the drill well. In August 2009, time was running out for a tiny newborn prehensile-tailed porcupine named Clark. Just days after his birth, he seemed weak. Two weeks later, the little guy still refused to eat, and prospects for his survival were bleak. Guglielmo says she and Stacey Tabellario, a keeper now at Asia Trail, worked tirelessly with the Zoo’s Department of Animal Health, but weren’t seeing any improvement from the little ball of rust colored hair just starting to form quills.

Soon after Clark was born, Guglielmo had realized something wasn’t right. These nocturnal animals nurse for very short periods, making it next to impossible to monitor nighttime nursing. But Clark wasn’t gaining weight and was growing weaker every day. He was medicated for an intestinal problem, and his keepers needed to get him to eat somehow—and fast. From the start, they knew handling a porcupine was not going to be easy.

“Normally in hand-rearing you’d hold the baby animal in a blanket or cradle it like a mother would hold a human baby, but that’s a real challenge when you’re dealing with a porcupine,” Guglielmo says. “That’s not how they nurse and it’s not natural for them.”

When porcupines nurse, the mother and the baby stand up, facing each other. It almost looks like they’re playing patty-cake before the baby moves underneath to get at the milk. Trying to replicate this routine, Guglielmo brought in a wooden perch that she used to show off porcupines for Zoo visitors. She hoped Clark would sit on the perch so she could feed him formula with a syringe. The perch worked well enough, but he still wasn’t interested in eating. Then a little bit of banana saved the day.

Adult porcupines love banana, and Clark did too. When Guglielmo and the Zoo nutrition staff added some banana to his formula, Clark finally turned the corner. To accommodate his growing teeth, they also designed an extra thick nipple for his bottle. Guglielmo’s life went on hold for almost two months, but she says she’d do it all again in a heartbeat.

“I had no idea how labor-intensive it could be taking care of this guy,” Guglielmo says, feeding Clark, now a healthy two-year-old, a slice of his favorite yellow fruit. “The effort to help him survive involved curators, keepers, veterinary staff, nutritionists, and even the Zoo police who opened the gates for us in the middle of the night. “Today he’s doing great, and he still loves his bananas.”

Caring for Cats

In the porcupine’s case, the Zoo staff stepped in to save an individual animal that was sick and needed special care, but hand-rearing also is a component of larger efforts to save endangered species around the world. For example, today all of the clouded leopards born in North America are hand-reared.

Clouded leopard mothers often either ignore or hurt their cubs, and in either case cubs can die, explains Kenneth Lang, senior mammal keeper at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) headquarters in Front Royal. Lang is an expert at hand-rearing. Through it, he says, the Zoo can maintain a captive population of these endangered animals who “become ambassadors for their parts of the world where conservation is very badly needed.” Clouded leopard infants have a 47 percent survival rate, which soars to 99 percent if the cats are hand-reared. Over the past 30 years, SCBI has been responsible for more than 70 clouded leopard cubs.

Clouded leopards are also shy and very easily stressed. But through the handrearing process, barriers come down, and keepers have an easier time managing and breeding the cats. “We can actually sit in
the enclosure like a piece of furniture when they interact with each other,” Lang says. “That allows us to head off aggression and at the same time not distract the cubs from interacting with each other.”

Strict protocols are in place to ensure an animal does not become too “imprinted” on a human and then is not able to relate to its own species or breed later on. “We feed them, burp them, and put them back
to sleep,” Lang says. “We don’t try to make them pets. We’ve done generations of hand-rearing, and we’ve never had a breeding problem with the clouded leopards.”

Acknowledging there is a high “cute factor” in handling baby animals, keepers stress they never handle the cubs for the sake of handling them. “We’re not doing this because we want to or because they’re cute,” says former keeper Jilian Fazio, who has hand-reared a number of clouded leopards, red pandas, and leopard cats. “This is what the species needs to maintain a sustainable captive population. Every animal is so important, and much of what we learn from them is critical to their survival and management in the wild.”

Aside from a sniff or two around the enclosure or nest boxes, animal moms rarely notice the babies are removed. The human handlers tend to show more of a reaction and aren’t shy about bragging about the new kids. “When the cubs are first born, every time we pull them it’s emotional,” says Jessica Kordell, a member of the clouded leopard team. “Each time it’s a different experience, and their personalities are so different. We learn what’s special about each one. It’s amazing how quickly they learn.”

The cubs are very particular about who’s taking care of them, and they don’t like change. The more experienced members of the staff start the process, and newer members rotate in during the weeks that follow so the animals follow the same routine over a six-to-nine-month period.

Bird Breeding
In some parts of the Zoo, hand-rearing starts long before the baby arrives. “Handrearing starts the day we bring the egg downstairs to the incubator,” says Sara Hallager, who has hand-reared about 50 kori bustard chicks at the Bird House since the first one hatched here in 1997. “We treat that egg like it’s the new chick.”

Kori bustards are the world’s heaviest flying birds, with males weighing up to 18 kilograms. They are native to the grasslands of eastern and southern Africa. There are 25 species of bustard, most of which are in decline.

Hallager and other keepers monitor a kori bustard egg for 21 days, controlling heat and humidity because large fluctuations can be lethal. Around day 23, the egg starts rocking, and a chick, no bigger than 100 grams, breaks out—wet and exhausted. Next the chick is moved to a brooder box, where a feather duster temporarily replicates a mom. Twelve hours later, it’s time for a first feeding of crickets along with watermelon for good hydration.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has honored the Zoo’s work raising koris. Hallager hopes the lessons learned from the koris can be applied to other varieties of large bustards—such as the great Indian bustard, estimated to have a mere 300 remaining in the wild.

“Koris are an indicator species of what’s happening in the savanna ecosystem,” she says. “The world’s largest flying birds can tell a great story of Africa, where illegal hunting and habitat loss are a threat to all species.”

In New Zealand, kiwi parents bring new meaning to the term “empty nester.” They have nothing at all to do with their chicks. “Kiwi parents don’t rear their young,” explains keeper Kathy Brader, who handrears kiwis. “Leaving the young with the parents can be quite dangerous because the parents can kill them in about three or four days. In the wild they tend to live in family groups, but the babies move to a different territory from their parents early on. And they’re really helpless when they hatch.”

Typically an enormous kiwi egg is pulled from beneath the father, who sits on the egg instead of the mother. After the chick hatches, it’s placed in a special isolette box padded with soft towels. The little chick snuggles there until it’s able to stand and walk, about six days later. Next the kiwi is moved to a brooder box. Getting the right food mix can involve a lot of trial and error, says Brader, noting that one chick she cared for ate much better when a bit of canned dog food with gravy was added to the menu.

New Zealand’s Operation Nest Egg program is one of the most successful efforts in the world to save a species, Brader notes, adding that she hopes people learn the kiwi’s story from the work being done here. Even many New Zealanders, she says, tune in to the Zoo’s kiwi cam to get a peek at the funky-looking bird.

“Kiwis have been on the planet for 65 million years, around the time the dinosaurs died out,” she remarks. “There aren’t many animals we can say that about. I think we have an obligation as stewards of this planet to preserve as much as we can. I hope people think not only about the kiwi, but what they can do in their own backyards to preserve the birds they have at home.”

When asked how she handles the work and the worry involved in raising these one-of-a-kind birds, Brader sounds a lot like a mom. “I have a connection to them,” she says with a chuckle. “Why do we love the people we love? Why do some people love dogs and others love cats? I love working with all my kiwis. It’s just a real privilege. They’re in my heart and soul.”

Sloth Bear Cub Born At National Zoo

Our sloth bear Hana gave birth to one cub on December 19, 2012.

National Zoo’s Sloth Bear Gives Birth to a Cub

The female sloth bear at the Smithsonian's National Zoo gave birth to a single cub on Monday, Jan. 9. The cub was born in an inside den at the National Zoo's sloth bear exhibit.

National Zoo staff are monitoring the cub and its 11-year-old mother, “Hana,” via a camera mounted in their den, but Zoo veterinarians and keepers will not examine the cub for at least several weeks. They do not want to disturb the mother and cub during the critical first few weeks of the cub’s life to allow them time to bond. Zoo staff also hope to determine the cub’s gender at that time.

This is the third cub for Hana; she gave birth to two cubs in December 2004, but both cubs died within four days of being born. At birth, sloth bear cubs are very small, fragile, and dependent on maternal care. They are known to stay in their dens until they are two or three months old, and will stay with their mother for two or three years. Female bears are known to carry their young on their backs with the cubs holding on to the mother's long shaggy fur.

No photographs or video of the cub are available. The cub's father, 24-year-old “Merlin,” may still be seen at the Zoo's sloth bear exhibit near the sea lion exhibit.

When Asia Trail opens this fall, sloth bears will be the very first animals Zoo visitors see when entering the main gates on Connecticut Avenue. They are one of seven species to be exhibited on the Zoo's Asia Trail, which will also include clouded leopards, Asian small-clawed otters and giant pandas. Asia Trail is scheduled to open in October.


Sloth bears are native to the tropical deciduous forests of India and Sri Lanka, with no solid estimate of how many remain in the wild. Sloth bears usually mate in early summer and females give birth six to seven months later. It is unknown how long sloth bears live in the wild, but these bears have lived up to 40 years in zoos. They are listed as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.


JANUARY 19, 2013
Time flies: Our sloth bear cub is one month old today! Hana continues to be very attentive to him or her, and keepers are still monitoring the pair closely through their closed-circuit cam. Because the cub’s dark hair is growing quickly, it’s getting tougher to spot. (If it turns just so, the white patch of fur on its chest gives its location away!)

Even if keepers can’t always see the cub nursing, they can hear that distinctive suckling sound as well as some typical squeaks and squawks. On occasion, they spot Hana and cub pawing at each other as though they are playing! Exercising those limbs is important, and the cub is almost on the go! It can push itself up using it’s front legs, but it has not yet mastered using its back legs. It will be another few weeks before it’s fully crawling and climbing aboard mom’s back.

DECEMBER 21, 2012
Forget two turtle doves—we’ve got two bearing bears! Our 18-year-old sloth bear Hana gave birth to a single cub around 8:30 a.m. on December 19, 2012—which happens to be her birthday, too! Animal care staff are keeping a close watch on the cub through a closed-circuit TV camera, and it appears both bears are doing great. Mom is very attentive, and the cub has successfully nursed. If the cub thrives, it will be a few months before it goes on exhibit. On warm winter days, Zoo visitors can watch the cub’s father, Francois, sunning himself on Asia Trail.


JANUARY 30, 2013
Hana and the cub continue to do well! Keepers are seeing the cub sit up more but it still hasn’t tried to climb onto Hana’s back. Hana leaves the den more frequently and eats small snacks on a daily basis, but she still spends the majority of her time in the den with the cub. We occasionally see Hana sitting next to the cub or going into the tunnel connecting the den to her outer enclosure, coming back to nuzzle the cub briefly, and then repeating. We wonder if she’s teaching that it’s okay when mom leaves because she’ll always come back? The cub is certainly becoming calmer when she leaves the den and not screaming at the top of its lungs like it did during those first few weeks!

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Sloth bears have shaggy, dusty-black coats, pale, short-haired muzzles, and long, curved claws that they use to excavate ants and termites. A cream-colored "V" or "Y" usually marks their chests. Sloth bears' nostrils can close, protecting the animals from dust or insects when raiding termite nests or bee hives. A gap in their teeth enables them to suck up ants, termites, and other insects.
SIZE:
Sloth bears grow five to six feet long, stand two to three feet high at the shoulder, and weigh from 120 (in lighter females) to 310 pounds (in heavy males).
GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION:
Most sloth bears live in India and Sri Lanka; others live in southern Nepal, and they have been reported in Bhutan and Bangladesh.
STATUS:
The sloth bear is listed as vulnerable on the World Conservation Union's Red List of Threatened Animals.
HABITAT:
Sloth bears live in a variety of dry and wet forests, and also in some grasslands, where boulders and scattered shrubs and trees provide shelter.

Lion Training at The National Zoo



Our seven young lions have been working hard through the summer months! Instead of learning their ABCs, they’re learning behaviors that help animal care staff evaluate their health, including opening their mouth, showing their paws, getting up on a bench, and lying down in practice to receive a vaccination. We’ve been tracking their achievements—and adorable blunders—on camera. They’re certainly earning their meatballs and we think you’ll be impressed by their progress.

National Zoo Orangutans Turn High-Tech with Apps for Apes


 When great ape keepers at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo were deciding how to add more variety and enrichment to their animals’ lives, they turned to Orangutan Outreach and a program that had seen great success in 12 other zoos around the world: Apps for Apes. With the tap of a finger, keepers are introducing the Zoo’s six orangutans to iPads, which provide unique stimuli. They found that 36-year-old Bonnie likes to bang on the drums, 16-year-old Kyle prefers the piano and 25-year-old Iris is content to listen to the soothing sounds of the koi pond while watching animated fish splash.

“Apps for Apes fits perfectly in this new era of zoo keeping,” said Becky Malinsky, great ape keeper at the National Zoo. “It’s about changing up the day-to-day lives of our animals. We already vary their food, toys and social interactions every day, but the iPad offers another way to engage their sight, touch and hearing.”

The Zoo began participating in the Apps for Apes program last year, when a keeper’s family member donated an iPad to the Great Ape House. Malinsky and fellow animal keeper Erin Stromberg talked with the other program participants to determine which apps were the most popular among orangutans. In the past few months, the Zoo’s repertoire has grown to more than 10 apps, including musical instruments, cognitive games, drawing programs and others. Eventually, the Zoo hopes to connect its orangutans with those at other zoos using video conferencing platforms.

Enrichment is an integral part of the daily care and quality of life for the animals at the Zoo. Staff study animal behavior and determine what kinds of enrichment are appropriate for each species and, occasionally, individual animals. They may alter an exhibit; train an animal; introduce new smells, sounds, foods and objects; or enlist an animal in a research project. Since 1994, the National Zoo’s orangutans have used touch-screen monitors as part of a cognitive study that tests orangutan memory, tool use and social learning.

“Apps for Apes is all about giving orangutans in human care choice over their environment,” said Stromberg. “With the iPad, we’re hoping to tap less into the critical-thinking outlet and more into a creative outlet. If they’re engaged in an app, we’ll keep going. If not, they have the choice to walk away.”

As the world becomes ever more tech savvy, Apps for Apes also helps visitors connect with the orangutans and raises awareness about the challenges these intelligent animals face in the wild.

“Primarily, we want the Apps for Apes program to help people understand why we need to protect wild orangutans from extinction,” said Richard Zimmerman, founding director of Orangutan Outreach. “We do that when we show Zoo visitors how similar humans and apes are, be it through observation, talking with wildlife experts or seeing the apes use the same technology we use every day.”

Native to Indonesia, orangutans live in the tropical rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. Over the past seven decades, humans have cleared land that was originally orangutan territory in order to meet the growing demand for palm oil products, fast-growing pulp wood and food crops leaving orangutans—which are solitary by nature—in competition with one another for space, food and mates. Scientists estimate that in the past 75 years, the number of wild orangutans has decreased by 80 percent. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the Bornean orangutan as endangered and the Sumatran orangutan as critically endangered.

Fans who want to provide the National Zoo’s apes with additional engaging apps can purchase an iTunes gift card through the Giving Tree on the Zoo’s website. Orangutan Outreach is also accepting iPad donations directly and will distribute the tablets to zoos around the country. Institutions that previously lacked the resources to participate would then be able to offer their orangutans the iPad enrichment experience.

SMITHSONIAN’S NATIONAL ZOO KEEPER KATHY BRADER RECEIVES ORDER OF MERIT

NEW ZEALAND PRIME MINISTER JOHN KEY RECOGNIZES KIWI CONSERVATION EFFORTS
The Smithsonian's National Zoo is a global leader in brown kiwi conservation largely because of Animal Keeper Kathy Brader's efforts, and her devotion to this endangered species was honored recently by New Zealand's Prime Minister, John Key. On Jan. 1, Key appointed Brader an Honorary Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. He recognized her devotion to kiwi public education and outreach, as well as her success in breeding these unique birds and propagating the species.

Brader began her career at the Zoo's Bird House in 1986, just nine years after the Zoo became the first institution outside of New Zealand to hatch a kiwi. Kiwi in zoos are extremely rare. Only five zoos outside of New Zealand have successfully bred these unique birds. Under Brader's care and instruction, the Zoo successfully hatched and raised six kiwi—three males and three females—between 2005 and 2012. The Zoo currently has seven kiwi in its collection. Five live at the Rock Creek campus, and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va., also has a breeding pair of kiwi.

Since 2005, Brader has served as the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) Species Survival Plan coordinator and studbook keeper for all brown kiwi outside New Zealand, which includes more than 53 kiwi in 13 institutions in North America, Europe and Asia. In this role, she matches kiwi and their mates by considering factors such as health, sexual maturity, breeding capability and personality. For her commitment to brown kiwi breeding and management in North America, Brader won the AZA 2012 Plume Award from the Avian Scientific Advisory for Exceptional Individual Achievement in Avian Husbandry.

Working closely with the New Zealand Embassy and New Zealand Department of Conservation, Brader and the National Zoo strive to maintain and conserve the well-being of the world's kiwi population. On Oct. 12, 2012, Brader arranged for Zoo Director Dennis Kelly to repatriate the Zoo's kiwi feathers to the embassy of New Zealand in a Maori ceremony. This strengthened the Zoo's role in New Zealand's conservation and cultural recovery efforts.

Brader was instrumental in creating the United States' only "Meet a Kiwi" program at the National Zoo, where visitors can observe these birds up close and learn about the Zoo's partnership with conservation organizations, including Operation Nest Egg. "Meet a Kiwi" takes place in the Bird House every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11 a.m.
