BROOKLYN, NY, UNITED STATES, February 13, 2025 / EINPresswire.com / -- A powerful new chapter in Brooklyn’s spiritual life unfolded Sunday during the Spanish-language service at the renowned Brooklyn Tabernacle Church. Latin Christian music icon Marcos Witt and the six-time Grammy Award-winning Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir led 1,500 people in a historic afternoon display of unity and worship.
Beginning in September with just a few
Grammy and Billboard Award-winning worship leader Marcos Witt led an unforgettable time of worship, with the entire audience singing along. In a moment of profound unity, the famed, multiracial Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir joined Witt on stage, performing in Spanish, even though most of its members are not fluent in the language.
For Witt, this was much more than an event or a special appearance—it was something deeply personal. As a teenager and young adult, he often listened to his mother play early Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir records. Now, decades later, he found himself not only ministering at Brooklyn Tabernacle, but being accompanied by the same choir that had been part of the soundtrack of his early faith.
During the service, Brooklyn Tabernacle Senior Pastor Jim Cymbala acknowledged the great diversity present. As he mentioned the names of Spanish-speaking nations, those in attendance erupted in applause. Remarkably, every country in Central and South America was represented in the congregation, as was every Spanish-speaking nation in the Caribbean.
Despite not speaking Spanish, Pastor Cymbala has a big heart for the Hispanic community in his native Brooklyn and beyond.
Over the years, Pastor Cymbala has ministered extensively throughout Latin America, particularly in Argentina, a country he has visited more than 30 times.
Closer to home, about 1.9 million Spanish speakers live in the New York metropolitan area. About 20 percent of Brooklyn is Hispanic, including many immigrants. Yet there are only a few Spanish-language evangelical churches. Realizing this need, Pastor Cymbala sprang into action. In this time of uncertainty—especially for immigrants—he has led Brooklyn Tabernacle in its effort to embrace its Spanish-speaking neighbors. This historic gathering is just one example and result of that effort.
As the evening of worship came to a close, Marcos Witt and the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir performed one of Witt’s most beloved songs, “Dios Ha Sido Bueno.” It was a very meaningful moment for Pastor Cymbala, who discovered this song on one of his trips to Argentina a decade ago and immediately fell in love with it—so much so that he often sings it with his English-speaking congregation during services.
This evening of worship was more than a musical event; it was a powerful display of unity, with people of many races and backgrounds worshipping together—and this time the primary language was Spanish, not English.
“What happened today could only have been done by God,” Pastor Cymbala said. “This city is home to so many Spanish speakers, and we want them to know: this church is their home, too.”
BT Español, which meets every Sunday at 3 PM, continues to grow as a spiritual refuge for New York City’s Spanish-speaking community, providing hope, community, and the message of Jesus in their native language.
