The teams traded turnovers to start the game, but the Great Danes were the first to take advantage on an Alie Jimerson goal just 1:20 in. Dakotah Savitcheff forced a failed clear on the Big Green to set up Jimerson for the unassisted tally.
Dartmouth would lock the game at one, but Martin gave UAlbany the lead on a behind-the-back
score. Emily Mizer advanced into open space down the middle, hitting Martin at the top of the crease for the goal. The Danes increased the cushion to two goals moments later, as Jimerson passed up an open Martin in favor of Savitcheff cutting down the middle.
With both teams favoring long possessions, Dartmouth capitalized on a free position shot following a yellow card assessed to Sierra McIver. The Big Green would tie the game three minutes later.
John Battaglino’s squad went eight minutes without a shot on target, but Jimerson hit the post and fired for a save with under 10 minutes to go. Jimerson clanged the pipe after McIver forced a Dartmouth turnover at the edge of the UAlbany offensive zone.
Tewaaraton nominee Jaclyn Leto had a close-range chance to give Dartmouth its first lead, but Courtney Henderson stepped in to make the stop and maintain the 3-3 tie with 8:20 on the clock.
As attention turned more and more to Rachel Bowles, the graduate student took a beating around the crease to earn a free position shot. Bowles stepped off the fan to hit Martin for the go-ahead goal, 4-3.
McIver again made moves to secure the draw control with a one-goal lead, and the Great Danes called timeout in an effort to keep the momentum. Despite a changing of hands, a lengthy Dartmouth possession to end the half came up empty courtesy of the UAlbany defense. The Great Danes held a 4-3 edge at the break.
Dartmouth tied the game to kick off the second period, but Alexis Drumm helped the Purple & Gold recover by intercepting a pass at the top of the eight-meter fan. The teams traded extra-player opportunities with five minutes expired, but the Great Danes cashed in on a Jimerson-Martin combo.
The Big Green responded by taking its first lead of the game, 6-5 with 17:52 remaining; but UAlbany used a four-goal unanswered run to regain control. Martin fired the equalizer for her fourth goal of the game, while Jimerson once again converted on a high-low tough angle to re-take the one-goal edge.
Bowles drew a yellow card in transition off of a Martin draw control, setting up a Kaylee Rickert shot with 12 minutes to play. Savitcheff scooped up the rebound to make the score 8-6. The Big Green called timeout but failed to score as Christine Johnson forced a turnover to send the Danes downfield.
Looking to run out the clock, the Purple & Gold spread the field and the Dartmouth defense. Savitcheff worked around her defender for a two-on-one break, hitting Julie Cryderman for a 9-6 advantage with under five minutes to play.
Her third important draw control win late in the second half, Martin kept possession with the Great Danes. The junior would force a turnover with under two minutes to play as Dartmouth was picking up momentum after making the score 9-7. The defense stepped up again as the clock ticked down to one minute; senior Christine Johnson intercepted a pass to lock up the victory.
UAlbany defeated a previously undefeated Ivy League team on its home turf for the second time this season. Yale was perfect at home before the Danes visited for a 13-7 win on April 2. Dartmouth was 5-0 at Scully-Fahey Field prior to Monday’s contest.
Sarah Martin led UAlbany in scoring with four goals, adding five draw controls to her day. Alie Jimerson went for four points on two goals and two assists, and Dakotah Savitcheff recorded three points on the day. Defensively, Christine Johnson led the way with three caused turnovers and Courtney Henderson made six saves between the pipes.
