Cardinals Hand Orange First ACC Loss

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Syracuse volleyball team dropped its first ACC match of the season to Louisville on Friday evening in a four-set loss at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky.

A slow start by the Orange paved the way for a 25-12 Cardinal victory in the first set. Despite the loss in the opening set, the Orange were able to come back and rally in the second, defeating the Cardinals 25-22. It was Louisville, however, that would pull through to win the next two sets, 25-16 and 25-18. With the loss, Syracuse is now 11-3 on the season and 2-1 in ACC play.

The first few points of the opening set were exchanged between Syracuse and Louisville, but the
Cardinals soon ran away with a promising lead. With Louisville up by one at the 8-7 mark, the Cardinals took advantage of the Syracuse struggling offense and proceeded to go on a 12-2 run. Back-to-back kills by Louisville finished the lopsided first set, 25-12.

Syracuse didn't let Louisville carry too much momentum from the first set into the second, as the Orange began to find its way on offense. Consecutive Syracuse kills by Silvi Uattara and Santita Ebangwese put the Orange up 8-6. Syracuse continued to build a lead as a result of a service ace by Mariia Levanova and an attack error on Louisville's end, putting the Orange up 11-7. The Cardinals made a mini-comeback and tied it at the 15-point mark, but the Orange continued to make strides up until the end of the set. A kill by Nicolette Serratore capped the victory in the second set for the Orange, 25-22.

Louisville came out firing in the third set, jumping out to a 9-2 start. The Orange proceeded to cut the lead down to three at the 11-8 mark, but couldn't quite keep up with the Cards as they took off on an 8-0 run. With the Cardinals up 21-11, the Orange made one final push in the final points of the set, but it wasn't enough to shake Louisville, as they came out on top 25-16.

The Cardinals continued to carry the momentum into the fourth set, starting off with a 4-0 lead stemming from two straight kills by Louisville and two unforced Syracuse errors. The Orange, however, continued to fight trailing from behind. Back-to-back kills by Uattara brought Syracuse within one point at the 10-11 mark. Louisville made a familiar run again in the middle of the set, going on an 8-1 run to bring the Cardinals ahead with a 19-11 lead. Syracuse continued to fight until the end, starting on a 6-3 run into the final points of the game. Just as Louisville started, Louisville ended with two consecutive kills, sealing the victory over the Orange, 25-18.

Uattara led the Orange in kills on the night with 10, while Nicolette Serratore and Monika Salkute each added six kills. Senior setter Gosia Wlaszczuk assisted on 23 of the kills and posted 11 digs.

The Syracuse back row was powered by sophomore libero Belle Sand and freshman Jalissa Trotter, each tallying 14 and 12 digs, respectively.

Sophomore Leah Levert led the Orange at the net, racking up six total blocks on the evening. Ebangwese and Salkute both added five total blocks.

The Orange are back in action this Sunday, Oct. 4, taking on Notre Dame at noon in South Bend, Ind.
