During Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 21, 2013, students from Brighton High School and The University of Rochester will volunteer their time and efforts to aid Flower City Habitat (FCHH) for a full day build.
Currently, FCHH is building three houses along the Brown Street area. These Juniors and Seniors will be out in the January weather hammering nails, hanging drywall, and other construction projects needed to complete these homes with the Hawthorne, Pardner, and McMillan families. The goal of the day is to reinforce Dr. King’s legacy of taking action to create positive change in our communities.
“At school we watched a video on MLK day. The message was that Monday is not just a day off from school, it is a day to take action and help to better the world,” said Sarah Tunnell, senior at Brighton High School. “I have decided to spend my day with [Flower City] Habitat for Humanity because I feel that the first way to better the world is to better my community. I truly enjoy working with Flower City Habitat and look forward to the build.”

“I have participated in other Habitat for Humanity volunteer programs, and I helped build a house in South Africa with my mom about 4 years ago. I truly loved it,” said Brighton High School senior, Gabi Lipschitz. “I think that participating in with Flower City Habitat on MLK day represents an aspect of what he stood for, bettering and strengthening your local community. I can't wait to build here in Rochester.”
Along with volunteering on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Brighton High School Habitat Club students are looking to raise $65,000 with the Brighton community to fund (and then build) a house with a FCHH family. Currently the students have a Brighton community member matching donations dollar for dollar their donation efforts (up to $32,500).
