INTREPID SEA, AIR & SPACE MUSEUM ANNOUNCES 2013 “KIDS WEEK” PROGRAMS
WEEK OF PROGRAMMING PROVIDES FUN AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES DURING PRESIDENTS WEEK
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will host its annual “Kids Week” from Saturday, February 16 – Sunday, February 24. During “Kids Week,” children will have the opportunity to participate in dozens of fun, educational and interactive activities the whole family will enjoy.
This year’s “Kids Week” programming partners include the New York Mets, New York Rangers, New York Knicks, New York Jets, New York Liberty, NASA, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey presents Built to Amaze!, Scooby Doo! Live Musical Mysteries, Broadway’s Peter and the Starcatcher, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Cinderella, Annie, Motown: The Musical and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Off-Broadway’s STOMP, Gazillion Bubble Show and Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Musical Mystery, William Berloni Theatrical Animals, and many more.
This year’s special events include:
Saturday, February 16 & Sunday, February 17: Under the Big Top Weekend. Guest performances by Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey presents Built to Amaze! at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Kids will be dazzled by tricks performed by Marcin the Magician and balloon sculptures made by members of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. Special Acrobalance performance showcasing hand balancing acts at 2:00 PM. Circus performers will roam throughout the museum. Harry Potter™ the Exhibition, Sorting Hat Experience will be available from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
Monday, February 18: Science Meets Science Fiction Day. Special Gazillion Bubble Show performance at 12:00 PM. David Defelice of NASA will present “Blockbuster Technology” How Reel Science and Real
Science Inspire One Another at 2:00 PM.
Kids can also meet and take pictures with their favorite characters from Scooby Doo! Live Musical Mysteries at 3:00 PM. Harry Potter™ the Exhibition, Sorting Hat Experience will be available from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Appearances from the 501st and Rebel Legions Star Wars characters and the United States Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team throughout the day.
Tuesday, February 19: On Broadway. Guest performances by Broadway shows Peter and the Starcatcher, Annie, Cinderella, Nice Work if You Can Get It and more starting at 12:00 PM. Tony Award-winning animal trainer William Berloni will make an appearance with his four-legged Broadway Stars and will answer questions from guests at 1:00 PM. Performance by STOMP at 1:45 PM. Characters from Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark on Broadway will be on hand at 2:15 PM to take pictures. Performance by Bunnicula: A Rabbit Tale of Musical Mystery at 3:30 PM. Harry Potter™ the Exhibition, Sorting Hat Experience will be available from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Interactive displays and activities throughout the day.
Wednesday, February 20 – Friday, February 22: Intrepid Ports of Call Day. Kids will take an exciting trip “around the world” to learn about the culture, history and people at each of the USS Intrepid’s ports of call, and participate in a broad array of interactive activities. After completing a challenge at each of the eight different country stations, including origami making in Japan, mask making in Brazil, 3-D coral reef crafts in Australia and playing Olympic Games in Greece, children will earn a stamp in their special passports.
Saturday, February 23: Sports ‘n Games Weekend. Mr. Met will be available to take photos and sign autographs at 1:00 PM. Special appearances and activities from the NY Jets, Rangers and Knicks teams from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, including an inflatable obstacle course, hockey tournaments and basketball dribbling and skills practice. Interactive games at the Coca-Cola Sports Zone throughout the day.
Sunday, February 24: Sports ‘n Games Weekend. Special appearances and activities from the NY Jets, Rangers and Liberty teams from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, including an inflatable obstacle course, hockey tournaments and basketball dribbling and skills practice. Interactive games at the Coca-Cola Sports Zone throughout the day.
In addition to the special events and appearances, staff of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Education Department will lead interactive educational demonstrations and tours throughout each day. Free raffles and giveaways will also take place all week long, with prizes including a week at Camp Intrepid this summer, tickets to Operation Slumber and an Intrepid Family Membership.

About the Museum
Now home of the Space Shuttle Enterprise, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum complex includes the 900-foot-long aircraft carrier Intrepid; the guided missile submarine Growler; and an extensive collection of 27 aircraft including the A-12 Blackbird, the fastest plane in the world, and the British Airways Concorde, the fastest commercial aircraft in the world. Guests can experience areas of the ship including the Flight Deck, Hangar Deck, fo’c’sle (commonly known as the anchor chain room), new multimedia presentations and exhibit collections, interactive educational stations and a state-of-the-art public pier.
Guests to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum also can experience the 12,240 square-foot interactive Exploreum – which contains a variety of hands-on exhibits – that teaches guests about the different properties of the sea, air, space and living at sea as each relates to the ship Intrepid. In the Exploreum, guests can experience a flight simulator, transmit messages using Morse code, sit on the bunk of a crewmember, learn how the Intrepid turned salt water into fresh water and perform various tasks while wearing space gloves.
