Jonathan Barber and Vision Ahead are the First Runners-Up of the 2018 DC Jazz Festival’s DCJazzPrix Emerging Band Competition. Based in New York City and formed by drummer Jonathan Barber, Vision Ahead debuted as a quintet in January 2017, performing at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola.  Vision Ahead means to carry on a legacy forward, striving to break through barriers, reaching towards your goal. This band’s hope is to spark a fresh musical style that is relevant with today’s generation.

Named Modern Drummer’s “#1 Up-and-Coming Drummer of 2018,” the powerhouse, Hartford-born drummer Jonathan Barber initially fell in love with the instrument by watching his father perform in the family church. His upbringing in the church instilled in him a passion for gospel music and he later became attracted to jazz through the music of John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk, drummers Tony Williams, Max Roach, Roy Haynes and Art Blakey and the Hartford-based alto sax great Jackie McLean, who headed the jazz department of the Hartt School of Music, where Barber studied. Since relocating to New York City, he’s worked with the likes of pianists Kenny Barron and Harold Mabern, bassist Buster Williams, trumpeters Jeremy Pelt, Nicholas Payton and Wallace Roney, saxophonist J.D. Allen, Marcus Strickland and Abraham Burton. Barber’s debut as a leader, 2018’s Vision Ahead, firmly established the 28-year-old drummer as a leader and composer in his own right as well as a highly respected player. Offering a fresh blend of classic jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul and fusion, Vision Ahead is the first step in what promises to be a stellar career. Jonathan Barber was most recently listed by Paste Magazine as one of “12 New Artists to Watch in 2019.”

ROCKLAND COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT ACHIEVES NATIONAL ACCREDITATION

NEW CITY, NY - - In time for National Public Health Week, April 1 – 7, Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert are proud to announce that the Health Department recently became accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). National accreditation status is awarded to public health departments who have demonstrated their ability to meet the rigorous public health standards necessary to deliver quality public health services.

"This has been a long and comprehensive process and is the first time that our Health Department has sought and become accredited. The accreditation process has provided the framework for our Health Department to identify performance improvement opportunities, to improve management, develop leadership, and improve relationships with the community," said Dr. Ruppert. For more information about accreditation visit www.phaboard.org/what-is-public-health-department-accreditation/.

Recently, for the second year in a row, Rockland County ranked #1 in New York State for healthy living in the annual County Health Rankings. Overall health of a county is measured by how long people live (length of life) and how healthy people feel while alive (quality of life). Since 2013, Rockland County has been ranked one of the top three counties in New York State for overall health and has ranked first three times. The rankings are issued by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. Visit www.countyhealthrankings.org to view the report.

These accomplishments are especially noteworthy during National Public Health Week, sponsored by the American Public Health Association (APHA). The week reminds every one of the importance of public health in our communities and celebrates public health's role in helping residents live a healthier life. Everyone deserves to live a long and healthy life in a safe environment. Visitwww.nphw.org to find out about the daily focus for each day of National Public Health Week.

"I am extremely proud of the Health Department's dedication to making our county a healthier community for all of our residents. I encourage everyone to take advantage of the many programs and services that our Health Department offers," said County Executive Day.

Rockland County Department of Health's mission is to protect and promote optimal health for all residents. The Health Department helps to lay the foundation that puts healthy choices within reach, through research, data collection, health education, policy change, direct services, and working with community and faith-based partners to put policies and practices into place to build a safe and healthy community.

Creating a healthier nation, and county, is also up to each one of us. We need to make the choices that improve our own health and support efforts to make the healthy choice the easy choice for everyone in our community. Follow the Health Department on Facebook www.facebook.com/rockhealth and Twitter www.twitter.com/rockhealth to stay up-to-date on health-related issues, and visit the Health Department's webpage www.rocklandgov.com/health to find out about our programs and services.

Community Pancake Breakfast - April 7th - Yonkers Rotary & St John's Riverside Hospital

Film Festival Event: Managed Retreat

Join us April 27,2019, 3-6 pm at the National Lighthouse Museum when the New York Preservation Archive Project will present the Staten Island premiere of the acclaimed short film Managed Retreat (2018).

By the end of this century, New York City is expected to have up to 6.25 feet of sea level rise, radically reshaping its 520 miles of coastline and impacting more than 100 coastal neighborhoods.

An acclaimed short documentary portrait by director Nathan Kensinger, Managed Retreat examines the fates of three New York City neighborhoods that were purchased by the New York State government in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy to be demolished and returned to nature as part of the city’s first ‘managed retreat’ from rising sea levels.

This observational documentary follows the process of retreat over the course of one year in three waterfront communities on Staten Island, as homes are destroyed, streets are abandoned, and wild animals begin to return.

Director Nathan Kensinger is a documentary filmmaker, photographer and artist whose work explores hidden urban landscapes, environmental disaster zones, and coastal communities impacted by sea level rise. He will be joined at the Lighthouse Museum by a panel of experts studying the effect of rising sea levels on neighborhoods.

Tickets are $10 and include the price of admission to the Lighthouse Museum, so be sure to explore! The museum is only a 5-minute walk from the St. George Ferry Terminal, and we recommend you enjoy the trip over on the Staten Island Ferry.
