Women's Basketball Shakes Off Slow Start, Beats Utica By 18

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher women's basketball team shook off a sluggish first half and pulled away from Utica in the final 20 minutes to cap a 3-0 week with a 75-57 victory on Saturday afternoon at Manning and Napier Varsity Gym. 

Senior guards Sidney Tomasso (24 points, 12 rebounds) and Katie Moravec (12 points, 11 rebounds) had double-doubles for the Cardinals, who improved to 8-4

Men's Volleyball Finishes Opening Weekend With Two More Sweeps

ANGOLA, Ind. – The St. John Fisher men's volleyball team swept Lancaster Bible and Mount St. Joseph on Saturday to complete a 3-0 season-opening weekend at the Trine University Quad Match. 

The Cardinals, ranked No. 11 in the AVCA Coaches Poll to start the season, swept all three of their opponents in the two-day event.

Men's Volleyball Completes The Comeback And Earns A Huge Win Over Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's volleyball team was able to complete the comeback and take down Elmira College in a non-conference match in five sets on Friday night 22-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-23, 20-18. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 13-14 overall, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 19-10 overall in 2018.

After dropping the first two sets in the match, Fisher took back the momentum and rallied back and earned a hard-fought victory over Elmira who recently earned the number five seed in the upcoming United Volleyball Conference Tournament.

Back and forth action started off the first set, however Elmira was able to take control toward the end of the set with a 7-3 finishing run. Ben De La Cruz was able to get his impressive offensive night started early, as the outside hitter notched four of his game-high 23 kills in the opening set.

No. 24 Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Utica In Empire 8 Action

UTICA, N.Y. – The No. 24 St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team took down Utica College on Tuesday afternoon 14-5 in the team's third Empire 8 Conference matchup of the 2018 season. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while the Pioneers fall to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8.

Fisher started the scoring quickly in the first half, as the Cardinals were able to put a whopping 11 goals up on the scoreboard in the first 30 minutes for the second time this season.
Sophomore Mallory Eymer found the back of the net first for the Cardinals just over four minutes after the opening whistle. The next two Fisher goals came just 11 and 38 seconds after Eymer's tally as Claire Bollin and Logan Chase each notched their first goals of the game. Next to add her name to the score sheet was Kelsie Schindler with her 12th of the season to give Fisher the early five goal advantage.

Utica notched its first goal of the game at the 22:48 to cut the Cardinal lead to 5-1. The next Fisher goal came just after the 19 minute mark off of the stick of Bollin with Schindler picking up the assist. The Cardinals rattled off the next six goals over the last 16 minutes of the first half.

Morgan Young started the second Cardinal goal scoring spree with her 10th of the season. Followed by goals from Olivia Marziale and Jenna Lippert with Bollin and Maria Hristodoulou picking up the assists.

Hristodoulou then added to her assist with a goal of her own off of a feed from Schindler just 39 seconds after the Lippert tally. The last two Fisher first half goals were not until after the four minute mark as Lippert scored her second of the game this time from Hristodoulou. Schindler posted her fourth point of the first half as she took a Mary Grace Doyle pass and put Fisher ahead 11-1 with only two seconds remaining before the halftime horn sounded.

Senor Mackenzie LeVan scored her 12th of the season just 57 seconds after the second half began. The Pioneers added their second goal of the game at the 23:07 mark cutting the Fisher lead.
Alyssa Sabotka scored her second goal of the season, while Bollin notched her hat-trick goal as the Cardinals regained the 14-2 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the second half.

The Pioneers held the Cardinals scoreless for the remainder of the second half and scored the next three goals as Fisher was able to take bounce back and take home their second Empire 8 victory of the season.

All three Cardinal goalkeepers saw time in net, as Morgan Hayes started, made one save and was credited with her first win of the season, while Molly Maguire and Claudia Mocciaro both played in the second half with Maguire making two saves.

The Cardinals return home and are back in action on Thursday (today) when they welcome Buffalo State to Growney Stadium for a non-conference matchup at 5 p.m.

Eisenmenger Homers Twice as Baseball Falls to Ithaca

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Senior Scott Eisenmenger hit two home runs including a ninth inning grand slam, but the St. John Fisher College baseball team came up short as the Cardinals fell to Ithaca College, 11-8, in an Empire 8 bout at Dugan Yard.  The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Fisher and moved the team's record to 10-7 overall and 3-1 in the conference while the Bombers improved to 9-7 on the year and 2-2 in the Empire 8.

After falling behind by a three runs heading into the bottom of the fourth, Fisher got one back as Eisenmenger stepped in and smacked a solo shot over the left-center fence with two outs to make it 3-1 in the Bombers' favor.

Ithaca tacked on two more in the top of the sixth before the Cardinals answered with two of their own in the home half of the frame.  After a groundout to start the inning, Thomas Pasquale reached on an error and moved to third when Eisenmenger clubbed a double down the left field line.  With two runners in scoring position, Ryan Simmons and Allen Murphy each collected an RBI to pull Fisher to within two runs, 5-3.

The momentum swung back in the visitor's favor in the top of the eighth as the Bombers took advantage of a pair of Cardinals' errors and scored four unearned runs to hold a 9-3 edge.  Ithaca struck again in the top of the ninth with two more runs after loading the bases with a pair of hits and three walks.

Trailing 11-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Fisher's bats came to life.  After a groundout, Michael Beimel singled to left before Stephen Edgett followed suit with a base knock of his own.  Justin Graham kept the rally going with an RBI-single to right to make it 11-4.  Antony Mantova drew a pinch-hit hit-by-pitch to load the bases as Eisenmenger clobbered a 3-2 pitch into the Cardinals' bullpen to make it 11-8, but that was as close as Fisher would come as the Bombers escaped with the win.

Tim Geissel was saddled with the loss and moved to 3-1 after going 5.2 innings.  The freshman left-hander allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts.  Dillan Wilkinson walked three batters before being lifted for Pat Galer who went 2.1 innings.  Galer yielded four runs – all unearned- and tallied four strikeouts overall.  Ryan Felske was tagged for two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning while Jack Delaney struck out the only batter he faced.

In all, the team had 10 hits led by Eisenmenger who was 3-for-5 with two homers, a double and a season-best five RBI.  Graham was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored while Edgett had three hits in four at-bats.

Pitching Fuels Baseball's Doubleheader Sweep of Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team didn't show any signs of rust after a week off as the Cardinals allowed just two runs over 16 innings in a doubleheader sweep of the Elmira College Soaring Eagles on Sunday at Dunn Field.  With the sweep, Fisher, which has now posted four straight wins, moved to 8-6 on the season and 2-0 in the Empire 8 while Elmira remains winless at 0-11 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

FISHER 4, ELMIRA 0 (Seven Innings)

Sophomore pitcher Anthony Brophy earned his first win of the season after throwing a complete game shutout.  Brophy went 7.0 innings and yielded just five hits with six strikeouts overall.  The North Tonawanda native did not allow a walk.

After a scoreless first inning, Fisher got on the board in the top of the second as Scott Eisenmenger singled before Allen Murphy drew a walk and Ryan Brown dropped down a bunt single to load the bases with no outs.  The Soaring Eagles were able to limit the damage to one run with a double play before escaping the inning with a strikeout to keep it at 1-0.

Ryan Simmons staked the visitors to a two-run lead in the top of the fourth with his fourth home run of the year before the Cardinals tacked on another run in the sixth with an RBI single by Ryan Brown to make it 3-0.

In the top of the seventh, Stephen Edgett led off the frame with a single down the line and advanced into scoring position after a wild pitch.  Victor Konstantinovsky moved the runner up with a sacrifice bunt before Justin Graham got the job done with a bunt single of his own to plate Edgett and give Fisher a 4-0 edge.

The Cardinals produced eight hits in all led by Brown, Edgett and Graham who had two hits each.

FISHER 5, ELMIRA 2

Freshman Tim Geissel remained unbeaten on the season and picked up his third win after surrendering two runs on five hits over six innings.  Dillan Wilkinson threw two scoreless frames before Kyle Chambers netted his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning of work.

Fisher got on the board early after Jack Vivinetto singled up the middle to score Brown who had led off the second inning with a single to right.  The Cardinals added another run in the top of the fifth when Simmons smacked an RBI double to left that scored Thomas Pasquale to make it 2-0 in Fisher's favor.

In the seventh inning, Edgett worked a leadoff walk and came around to score when Graham clubbed a single up the middle to give the visitors a three-run cushion heading to the home half of the inning.

Elmira got a pair back in the bottom of the seventh on the strength of three hits, but Eisenmenger drove in a run in the eighth and ninth innings to give the Cardinals the 5-2 win.

Men's Lacrosse Falls To Oswego State In Non-Conference Action

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team traveled to Oswego, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference battle with Oswego State. The Cardinals fell to the Lakers 13-7 and fell to 4-2 overall on the year, while Oswego improved to 3-1 overall.

Fisher was the first team up on the scoreboard in the first half as Chance Gates tallied his fifth of the season with Zach Wagner picking up the assists six minutes into the game. Gates notched his second of the game just a minute and a half after his first goal, this time assisted by Andrew Rosso. Rosso then followed up his assist with a goal of his own at the 9:58 mark of a fee from Domenic Delevecchio.
Oswego tallied its first of the quarter at the 4:37 mark, until Gates scored his hat-trick goal under two minutes later on the man-up advantage to put the Cardinals back up three goals. Zach Wagner also picked up his second assist of the afternoon.

The field was flipped however in the second quarter, the Lakers tallied five goals in the first 10 minutes of the quarter to re-gain the lead 6-4. Before the halftime horn sounded, Nicholas Miller brought the Cardinals back within one as Oswego carried a 6-5 lead into the halftime break.

Much of the third quarter was a defensive battle, with both teams trying to gain the momentum moving forward. The Lakers however were first to break the second half deadlock and increase their lead to 8-5 with the only two goals of the third quarter.

Oswego was able to increase their lead 12-5 within the first 10 minutes of the final quarter. Fisher's comeback efforts were started by a TJ VanDeusen goal and Roger Panara assist with a little under four minutes remaining. That was followed by Rosso's second of the game and team-leading 16^th of the season from Miller to cut the Oswego lead to 12-7. However, the Lakers tallied the final goal of the game with 1:28 remaking till the final whistle.

Goalkeeper Justin Townsend again played all 60 minutes in net for the Cardinals. The senior finished with 10 saves in the game and now holds a 4-2 record in 2018. Joe Post was able to finish 14-24 inside the face off circle adding a team-high eight ground balls. 

The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday for another non-conference matchup, when the team hosts The College of Wooster at Growney Stadium at a scheduled start time of 4 p.m.

St. John Fisher College Softball Clinches Spot In E8 Title Game!

The St. John Fisher College softball team clinched a spot in the Empire 8 Conference title game after avoiding double-elimination with a dominating six-inning 8-0 win over Alfred. Fisher lost to Ithaca College earlier Saturday morning in a 4-1 loss after a four-run sixth inning from the Bombers.

With the win the Cardinals improve to 32-9 on the season.

The game was scoreless through four innings until Danielle Ventrone put the first run on the board with a leadoff solo homerun to start the fifth inning.

St. John Fisher College Baseball Beats Brockport

The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College baseball program improved to 28-8 overall with a 4-2 win at the SUNY College at Brockport on Tuesday afternoon. 

Senior Stephen Lewis earned the win on the mound, raising his record to 6-0 on the year, as the lefty allowed just one run over five innings.  Kevin Berge, DJ Mendenhall and Ryan Felske each pitched scoreless innings.  Loukas Brigham allowed one run, but was still able to secure his sixth save of the season.

Fisher took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning.  Cody Wiktorski singled, stole second and scored on a double from Nate Roethel.   Three batters later, Roethel scored on an infield single from Frank Carnevale.

Wiktorski scored another run in the eighth inning and Malcolm Kelsey crossed home on a wild pitch in the ninth.

Sophomore Scott Eisenmenger went 2-for-4 on the day, while Wiktorski went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
