Three Soaring Eagles Tally Double-Digits as Women’s Basketball Falls at Houghton 62-47

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Three different Soaring Eagles finished in double digits as the Elmira College women's basketball program dropped a 62-47 decision against the Houghton University Highlanders on Saturday in Empire 8 Conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Houghton opened the contest with a 7-0 run before Elmira would get onto the scoreboard with a layup from Nevaeh Winston '25 at the 7:38 mark. The Soaring Eagles would later trim the deficit to 8-4 as Laura Bogota '25 hit a jumper at the 4:54 mark.
  • Elmira would score the final points of the first quarter as Mallory Welty '26 connected on a 3-pointer with 1:58 remaining on the clock.
  • The Soaring Eagles would get off to a quick start in the second quarter as a layup by Taylor Jung '25 gave EC a 13-12 advantage. Amarionah Dixon '26 converted a 3-point play for Elmira after being fouled on a layup at the 7:50 mark to make it 16-12 in favor of the Soaring Eagles.
  • Houghton would battle back to take the lead before the end of the first half as Karina Crouse drained a 3-pointer for the Highlanders to make it 22-20 with 17 seconds left.
  • The Highlanders would open up a double-digit lead early in the third quarter following a 3-pointer from Kayla Camacho to make it 31-20. Welty scored the final five points of the quarter for the Soaring Eagles as they battled to trim the deficit to 42-37.
  • Houghton would lead by as many as 14 points early in the fourth quarter and held a double-digit lead for the entire 10 minutes before hitting a pair of late free throws to secure the 62-47 victory.
  • Winston paced Elmira in the contest with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Dixon and Welty added 11 points each for the Soaring Eagles. Welty finished 3-of-6 from 3-point range for Elmira, while Dixon added five steals and nine rebounds.

 
UP NEXT: The Soaring Eagles return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Russell Sage for an Empire 8 matchup beginning at 5:30 p.m.
