BREAKING NEWS: New York City Fire Department Battling Bronx 3rd-Alarm Structure Fire, 2363 Prospect Ave

Friday Morning 11:07am Update: Latest on last night's 5 alarm fire, FDNY Fire Marshals found that this fire started in the kitchen on the first floor. It started from a young boy, 3 ½ years old, playing with burners on the stove -#FDNY Commissioner Nigro on fatal 5th alarm at 2363 Prospect Ave #Bronx

The mother exited the apartment with her 2-year-old and 3-year-old, and left the door open. The fire quickly spread up the stairs  -#FDNY Commissioner Nigro on fatal 5th alarm at 2363 Prospect Ave #Bronx

The stairway acted like a chimney. It took the fire so quickly upstairs that people had very little time to react. They couldn’t get back down the stairs. Of those that tried, a few perished. Others were helped out onto the fire escapes, taken down by our members -Comm Nigro

Although our members got here in a little over 3 minutes, and bravely entered the building and did everything they could, and did save a number of residents, this loss is unprecedented  -#FDNY Commissioner Nigro on fatal 5th alarm at 2363 Prospect Ave #Bronx

If unfortunately you do have a fire in your apartment, you must close the door when you exit -#FDNY Commissioner Nigro

Following last night’s fatal fire, the #FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit is sharing safety information on the corner of E. 187 and Prospect Ave in the #Bronx until 2 pm


UPDATED 10:30pm: Mayor: at least 12 dead. Worst fire in several decades.

This is the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city - it will rank as one of the worst losses in a fire in many years -@NYCMayor DeBalsio

Based on the info now, I’m sorry to report 12 New Yorkers are dead, including 1 child. 4 people are critically injured, fighting for their lives, and there are other serious injuries as well -@NYCMayor DeBlasio

Fire started on the first floor and quickly spread upstairs. People died on various floors, they range in ages from 1 to over 50 -#FDNY Commissioner Nigro

This tragedy is, without question, historic in its magnitude. Our hearts go out to every family who lost a loved one here and everyone fighting for their lives -#FDNY Commissioner Nigro

UPDATE 9:17pm: Fire is now under control, fifth alarm transmitted for relief purposes.
UPDATE 9:03pm: NYC Mayor de Blasio is en route to the scene of the fire in the Bronx.
UPDATE 8:03pm: New York City Fire Department tweets, Over 160 #FDNY members are operating on scene of a 4-alarm fire, 2363 Prospect Ave #Bronx
UPDATE 7:49pm: According to New York City Fire Department, Currently 15 serious injuries to civilians reported.
UPDATE 7:39pm: Fourth alarm transmitted per command. Fire on multiple floors.
UPDATE 7:31pm: Firefighters making dozen plus rescues. This is a 5 story multiple dwelling.
