New York City, New York – The Purchase College
men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 non-conference match to John Jay
College at the Doghouse Monday evening. With a set scores of 28-26,
25-23 and 25-22, the Bloodhounds improve to 11-5 overall while the
Panthers drop to 9-11 on the season.
John Jay jumped out to an
early 7-1 lead but the Panthers fought back to tie it at eight apiece.
With the Bloodhounds leading 12-10, Purchase scored five straight points
to go up by three. Later on, the Panthers led 20-15 but John Jay
bounced back on a 9-4 run to tie it 24-24. The Bloodhounds eventually
took the first set, 28-26.
The visitors took the first four
points of the second but the Bloodhounds cut the deficit to 7-6.
Purchase increased its lead to 13-9. John Jay took its first lead of the
set after scoring four straight points, 15-14. The Bloodhounds extended
the lead to three but Purchase tied it at 20 apiece. John Jay ended the
set on a 4-1 run to win, 25-23.
The third set went
back-and-forth as John Jay had a 5-4 advantage. The Panthers went on a
5-0 run to lead by four. The Bloodhounds fought back to regain the lead.
13-12, after going on a 4-0 run of their own. With the score tied at
20-20, John Jay went on a 5-2 run to complete the sweep.
Junior hitter Riley Damerell (Rochester, NY) had a team-high 17 kills for the Panthers. Junior setter Andrew Schwab (Merrick, NY) chipped in another five kills and assisted the team 23 times throughout the match.
Defensive ace Matthew McCarthy (SR/Fayetteville, NY) totaled a team-best 22 digs while Damerell and Schwab combined for an additional 19 digs.
The
Panthers return to their home court on Wednesday (today) for a non-conference
match against the College of Staten Island. Match start is set for 7
p.m.
