Longo’s 7 points lead Herons to 5-0 win at St. Lawrence

William Smith College senior Krista Longo logged a hat trick and added an assist to lead the No. 6 Heron soccer team to a 5-0 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence in Canton, N.Y., this afternoon. With its eighth straight win, William Smith improves to 9-1-1 overall and 4-0-0 in conference play.

It was also the Herons' eighth straight shutout and ninth shutout of the season. The Saints fall to 8-3-0 and 1-3-0 in the Liberty League.

Longo had a hand in the first four goals of the game. Her seven points today are a career-high. She now shares a team-high with 11 points on five goals and an assist this season.  Junior Emma Diehl registered a goal and an assist. First-year goalie Kaileen Murray played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith and stopped the two shots she faced to secure her seventh shutout this year.

Longo started the scoring in the 32nd minute with a header goal after a corner kick sent into the box by Diehl. Longo struck again 13:13 later to make it 2-0. Her second goal came off a feed through the Saints' defense by junior Kara Shue.

In the 49th minute, junior Shay Callahan extended the William Smith lead to 3-0. Her second goal of the season came after a through ball by Longo. Longo completed her hat trick in the 62nd minute on a shot from 18 yards out. In the 82nd minute, Diehl capped the victory with a penalty kick goal. It was her first goal this season.

Kelsey West played all 90 minutes in goal for the Saints and made three saves. The Herons finished with an 18-8 advantage in shots and a 9-1 lead in corners.

William Smith will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 16, when it travels to take on Vassar in a Liberty League match at 4 p.m.
