The William Smith College rowing team competed in the Head of the
Genesee today. However, due to conditions on the Genesee River, racing
was moved to the Erie Canal.
The Heron varsity eight turned in the team's top performance finishing fifth out of 13 crews. Hannah Glenshaw, Katherine Hesler, Grace Hutton, Emily Smith, Jennifer Sullivan, Margaret Cameron, Maggie Santinelli, Alexandra Townsend, and Nicole Guardino
turned in a time of 17:12.55. Division II Mercyhurst (16:03.91) took
the women's collegiate eight title by more than half a second over
Williams. RIT and Rochester were third and fourth, respectively.
In
the women's open 4, William Smith A recorded a time of 20:01.68 and
placed seventh, while
William Smith B's time of 21:04.36 put them 11th
out of 14 crews. Case A won the women's open 4 with a time of 18:44.42,
besting second place Hamilton by nearly 10 seconds.
The Herons
also placed seventh out of 11 crews in the women's novice eight race,
logging a time of 21:38.63. Ithaca (19:37.63) won the event by more than
a minute over second place Rochester.
"As coaches were are very proud of the steps the team is taking," Head Coach Sandra Chu
said. "We're developing a lot of racing skills at a rapid rate in a
short amount of time. With only three weeks on the water, no returners
to the 1V and a foundation of sophomores and first years, we consider
ourselves to be in the right place in our process. The team understands
and is moving through the process well. All boats improved on their
attack today. We continue to work on technical skills to improve our
length and run."
The Herons will be back on the water on Oct. 18, when they compete in the Head of the Charles.
