Poetry Slam and Open Mic / Our exciting "1st Wednesday" series continues with open mic, SLAM competition, and guest poet Joanna Hoffman. A Brooklyn resident, Hoffman has been on five National Poetry Slam teams, placed fourth overall at the Women of the World Poetry Slam in 2012, and is the Grand Slam Champion for the 2012 Urbana team. To take part in the open mic or slam, please register at 6:30 p.m. and bring two original poems of up to three minutes each. Registration closes promptly at 7 p.m., and

Preparing to Take the United States Citizenship Test / This workshop will present an overview of the structure and content of the U.S. Citizenship exam. It will also include an overview of the free test preparation materials available to the public. Participants will become familiar with the civics and English portions of the exam and will do some practice for both sections. This workshop is designed both for those who have already applied for U.S. citizenship and for those who are planning to do so in the future. The workshop will be given by Eileen McKee, Welcome Center Director and Citizenship Exam Preparation Instructor at Westchester Community College.

Music Remix / This teen program teaches hip hop history, rap and production, entrepreneurship, and performance confidence. Participants will demonstrate what they learned in a final presentation of their works. Registration is required. Refreshments will be served. Workshops take place on 2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23.

Claymation for African-American History Month / In honor of Black History Month the White Plains Library will host a four-part claymation workshop in which the participants will tell the life story of three famous African Americans. Westchester artist Susan Ordahl will discuss the general principals of animation, guide participants through the process of building characters made out of clay, and help participants develop effective story ideas. The finished claymation video will be posted on YouTube. 20 participants max. Registration is not required but greatly appreciated. For teens - high school. Snacks will be served.

Good dreams, bad dreams, day dreams and big dreams make this Giant Marshmallow of a comedy not only fun but inspiring. Kids participate by telling their favorite jokes, sharing their biggest dreams and discovering what it takes to make those dreams come true! 'Marshmallow' is a wonderfully entertaining method of inspiring children to face and overcome challenges -- both the inner and outer ones! This “edutainment” goes beyond teaching self-esteem or character education -- it endeavors to give children tools that will enable them to begin to achieve their goals. Ages 5-12

Black History StoryWalk Opening: "Molly, By Golly! The Legend of Molly Williams” / Along this StoryWalk®, you will learn about Molly Williams, an African American cook for NYC's Fire Company 11 in 1818. She is thought to be America's first female firefighter. The StoryWalk® is based on the book entitled, “Molly, by Golly! The Legend of Molly Williams, America's First Female Firefighter" written by Dianne Ochiltree and illustrated by Kathleen Kemly. The StoryWalk® is open to families with children in grades 1 - 6 beginning Sunday, February 17 and continuing through Sunday, March 17, 2013.
