THE ROSENDALE THEATRE AND BIG GAY HUDSON VALLEY PRESENT: JENNIE LIVINGSTON'S 'PARIS IS BURNING at THE ROSENDALE THEATRE SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9th 2020 at 2:00 PM
“Preserves in cinematic
amber a pre-'90s, pre-Giuliani New York City that looks and feels more hard and
hostile, and yet seems more innocent.”
Metro Weekly, Washington,DC
“For anyone who's ever felt
like an outsider, Paris is Burning is a reassuring reminder that someone
somewhere totally gets you.”
POV Magazine
“Livingston dives into the
ball scene of 1980s New York with an anthropologist’s eye and a big beating
heart.”
LA Times
Rosendale, New York - Where does voguing come from, and what, exactly, is
throwing shade? This landmark documentary provides a vibrant snapshot of the 1980s
through the eyes of New York City’s African American and Latinx Harlem drag
ball scene. Made over seven years, Paris
Is Burning offers an intimate portrait of rival fashion “houses,”
from fierce contests for trophies, to house mothers offering sustenance in a
world rampant with homophobia and transphobia, racism, AIDS, and poverty. Shot between 1985 and 1989, the narrative
inter-cuts between individual stories that chronicle the experiences of the
African-American and Latino, gay and transgender subculture in a time when the
city was consumed by the ideals of wealth and glamour. Featuring legendary voguers, drag queens, and trans women—including
Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija, Dorian Corey, and Venus Xtravaganza—Paris Is Burning brings it,
celebrating the joy of movement, the force of eloquence, and the draw of
community.
Paris is Burning was digitally remastered by the UCLA Film and
Television Archive in conjunction with Sundance Institute and Outfest UCLA
Legacy Project. Preservation funded by Sundance Institute, Outfest and the
Andrew J. Kuehn Jr. Foundation.
Congressman Delgado Speaks to Ulster Chamber
Kingston, New York - The Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce will host their annual Congressional Update Breakfast Meeting on Thursday, January 23rd from 7:30 to 9:00am at The Venue Uptown, 503 Washington Ave., Kingston.
First term Congressman Antonio Delgado will be making his second appearance as the 19th District's congressman. "I'm focusing on what I think are business interests," Delgado said. "I'm focused on making sure that we're going to be able to speak on the work that I've been doing as far as investing in the community, making sure that we are making it easier for people to do business in upstate New York.
"It's a discussion before the Chamber of Commerce. I'm pretty sure that the central organizing principle of the Chamber is to discuss the matters of business, particularly small businesses, and that's what I'm going to focus on."
Delgado said he plans to discuss the Rebuild Rural America Act, which he co-sponsored in the House. The bill would improve the way the federal government supports economic development projects in small towns and rural communities. The bill would also provide a $50 billion multi-year, flexible block grants to rural regions.
Delgado, who won a seven-person primary to get the Democratic Party's nomination in 2018, is an attorney and former Rhodes scholar. He defeated first-term incumbent U.S. Rep. John Faso, R-Kinderhook, in the general election to win the 19th Congressional District seat.
The 19th Congressional District includes all of Ulster, Greene, Columbia, Sullivan, Delaware, Schoharie and Otsego counties and parts of Dutchess, Rensselaer, Montgomery and Broome counties.
Chamber breakfast programs are a great way to network with other local business leaders and stay on top of current events. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. For more information or to register, call the Chamber at (845) 338-5100 or go online at www.ulsterchamber.org<http://www.ulsterchamber.org>

The New York Public Library Kicks Off 2020 With A Challenge for all New Yorkers: Make a Resolution to Read For 20 Minutes a Day

New York City, New York – The New York Public Library is encouraging every New Yorker to make a reading resolution in 2020: read, read to your child, or encourage your kids to read for at least 20 minutes a day.
The reading challenge was issued in an animated “ad” sent this morning to the Library’s 1.1 million subscribers. The animation is reminiscent of ads for gyms (popular around New Year’s Day), and encourages New Yorkers to get library cards, see book recommendations, and sign up for a new “Book of the Day” newsletter at nypl.org/2020.
“Looking to start a new chapter in 2020,” the animated ad asks. “Exercise your mind! Try a no-sweat
Hot/Cold: Expressions in Wax Exhibit: January 14-February 16, 2020
Poughkeepsie, NY -- Arts Mid-Hudson Gallery will host Hot/Cold: Expressions in Wax, an invitational exhibition curated by Tracy Leavitt featuring works created using the versatile and evocative substance of wax. This exhibition includes 11 different artists some of whom use wax in its hot, fluid state known as encaustic, some of whom prefer to work with it in its more viscous form called cold wax, and some of the artists utilize both forms in the same artwork. The show will run from January 14th - February 16th with an opening celebration on January 17th and a closing brunch on February 16th.
The Hot/Cold: Expressions in Wax exhibition explores innovative and compelling work made possible through the medium of wax. Additionally, the title serves to loosely define the thematic concern of visually expressing opposing forces. Through contrasts of shape, subject, textures, and color, both within some singular works but also in the placement of quiet, soft pieces next to sharp-marked, bright waxworks, the show provokes a sense of quiet and calm which leads to the cataclysmic and then back again, a constant turning.

Now, Costanzo is looking back to go forward. For one night only, in the New York premiere of his cabaret, he revisits his childhood, drawing on the leading ladies, crooners, and icons that helped form him. And, in a twist, he finds just enough low to balance out his highs. Developed with the Bearded Ladies Cabaret for Opera Philadelphia's Festival O19. Directed by John Jarboe.
