Molloy University Baseball Earns Team Academic Excellence Award from ABCA

Greensboro, N.C. - The American Baseball Coaches Association announced its 2018-19 Team Academic Excellence Award selections earlier this week. The baseball team was one of over 300 programs across the country at both the high school and collegiate level chosen.

To be considered, the team must earn at least a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year.

Vassar Women's Lacrosse Tabbed for IWLCA Academic Honors

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (July 29, 2019) -- The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) recently announced their year-end academic honors and the Vassar College women's lacrosse team was honored.

As a team, the Brewers were named to the 2019 IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad, posting a team grade point average of 3.70. The Brewers, who were one of 312 schools named across all divisions, have been earning team academic honors from the IWLCA as far back as the 2008-09 season. Vassar owned the top GPA in the nation in 2008-09 and again in 2010-11.

To earn the Academic Honor squad award, team are required to have posted a 3.0 team grade point average for the academic year of 2018-19.

Individually, Vassar saw nine student-athletes named to the 2019 Zag Sports Division III Academic Honor Roll. The nine members tied for the third-most of any DIII team in the nation with Endicott College, Misericordia College, Springfield College and York College (PA). Overall 650 student-athletes from 172 institutions were recognized.

To earn Academic Honor Roll honors, women's lacrosse student-athletes are required to be a junior, senior or graduate student and have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or greater.

Vassar saw Kristin Caolo, Emily Hamburger, Adele MacEwen, Fiona MacLeod, Sara Mathes, Sydney Nemphos, Gabi Patick, Tessa Waters and Lindsay Wolk all earn the award. Five of the seven seniors were honored for the second consecutive season, and over the last eight seasons VC has had 58 players including 29 over the last three years and 34 since 2015.

During the 2019 campaign, the Brewers posted an 8-8 overall record. Under the direction of 24th-year head coach Judy Finerghty, Vassar had a 5-5 mark in Liberty League play. The squad advanced to the Liberty League Tournament Quarterfinals before falling to Skidmore.

O’Connor named to Team USA for world indoor championship

SPARKS, Md.—Hobart College graduate Ethan O'Connor '13 is one of 23 players named to the U.S. men's team roster that will compete in the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. US Lacrosse announced its roster, as well as seven alternates, last week for the quadrennial championship which will be held in Langley, British Columbia, Sept. 19-28.

Team USA, which has earned a bronze medal at each of the past four world indoor championships will open pool play against defending gold medalist Team Canada on Sept. 19. On Sept. 20, the United States will play Israel in what will be a Hobart reunion of sorts. Team Israel's roster includes O'Connor's classmate and teammate Jake Silberlicht '13. The Americans will conclude pool play on Sept. 21 against the 2015 silver medalists, the Iroquois Nationals.

ALBANY, N.Y. - University at Albany women’s soccer head coach Nick Bochette has announced the addition of nine players to the Great Danes’ squad in 2019.  The class features players from two countries and four from New York State.

“We’re delighted to welcome this group to the UAlbany Class of 2023 and to our UAlbany Soccer family,” said Bochette.  “These nine young women are an energetic and talented group who have the character and the drive to achieve great things over the next four years.  We are excited to integrate them into an excellent group of returning student-athletes who are all hungry to build on the successes and challenges of last year.  There’s a lot to look forward to in the coming months, and we can’t wait to get started.”

The nine newcomers join a squad that has won three of the last four America East titles, and won a single-season program record 14 games in 2018.

Overholt Wins Canadian National U20 Title in 400 Hurdles

ITHACA, N.Y. — A great summer has kept getting better for sophomore Brooke Overholt, who won the 400 hurdles in the Under-20 division at the Canadian National Track & Field Championships on Sunday in Montréal.

Overholt's time of 59.29 seconds blew away the field in the finals after she cruised in a preliminary race of 1:01.94, which was good enough to win the third and final heat.

Overholt is coming off an Athletics Ontario U20 victory in the same event a couple weeks prior, then a seventh-place finish at the Pan American U20 Championships a week later in San José, Costa Rica, She is competing this summer after stellar freshman season with the Big Red, where she scored points at both the indoor and outdoor Ivy League Heptagonal Championships and competed in the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
