The Syracuse University Men's Lacrosse Centennial Celebration presented by Sedgwick Business Interiors and the 1979 Syracuse men's lacrosse team in memory of David Mulherin '79, will take place on Friday, April 1 at the Oncenter in downtown Syracuse. The special event is open to the public at a cost of $75 per adult and $25 per child. Those in attendance will have an opportunity to interact with lacrosse legends.
The event, which will have cocktails, dinner and dancing, also features an incredible lineup of guest
speakers, with Roy Simmons Jr. '58, Mark Winter '73, Jeff McCormick '83, Pat McCabe '91, Paul Carcaterra '97, Mike Powell '04 and Joel White '11 set to share their memories and stories of being part of the Syracuse lacrosse family.
Carcaterra, currently a lacrosse analyst and sideline reporter at ESPN, was a four-year letterwinner as a member of the Orange. He earned All-America honors as a midfielder in 1997 and helped the team to the 1995 NCAA Championship.
McCabe, a 2006 inductee into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame, was four-time All-American at Syracuse, including a three-time member first team honoree. A lockdown defender, he helped the Orange to three-straight NCAA Championships from 1988-90.
McCormick captained the Orange to their first NCAA Championship in 1983 and a 14-1 record. A two-time All-American and four-year letterwinner, he helped anchor an Orange defense that limited opponents to 8.78 goals per game over his career. He's a two-time captain at Syracuse, one of just 25 players to be named a captain in multiple seasons.
Powell is the program's only two-time Tewaaraton Award winner and all-time leading scorer in Syracuse history. One-of-13 four-time All-Americans at Syracuse, Powell is known as one of the game's greatest offensive players ever, and a four-time winner of the Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award, presented to the nation's top attackman. A two-time NCAA Champion, Powell is also a two-time recipient of the NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player Award.
Simmons Jr. is one of the game's most respected coaches, leading Syracuse to its first six NCAA Championships, including a stretch where 'Cuse won six NCAA Championships in a 13-year span, highlighted by three-straight from 1988-90. A 1991 inductee into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Simmons Jr. was an All-American player for the Orange on attack in 1958, before taking over the helm of the program in 1971. He finished his career with a .751 winning percentage, including an .860 winning percentage (203-33) over his final-16 seasons.
White is a three-time All-American defensive midfielder and another two-time captain for the Orange. He finished his career as Syracuse's all-time leader in ground balls (283), points by a defensive player (28), and goals by a defensive player (18). He's the first defensive specialist to win the Lt. Donald C. MacLaughlin Jr. Award as the nation's most outstanding midfielder and a two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist.
Winter is a three-year letterwinner with the Orange from 1971-73, Simmons Jr.'s first-three seasons at the helm of the program. A Baltimore native, Winter has been a successful attorney in Hershey, Pa. for many years and holds the title of, "Number One Historian of Syracuse Lacrosse." He and his wife, Linda Eng ('73), have been key supporters of the program for over 40 years.
