Herons edge Ithaca 6-3 for second straight win

GENEVA, N.Y. - The William Smith College tennis team collected a 6-3 win over Ithaca in Bristol Field House this afternoon. With the win, the Herons improve to 3-2 in dual matches this season.

William Smith swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead in the overall match. Junior Hannah More and sophomore Michaelann Denton cruised to an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, defeating Haley Kusak and Shayna Ginster. At No. 2, first-year Alex Greenberg and Katarina Kostovic posted an 8-4 victory. Sophomore Alex Cattie and first-year Connie Froass out lasted Ithaca's Mami Blumenthal and Maddie OVerholt 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.

First-year Sydney Ferry bested Jodi Grosberg 6-2, 7-6(7-4) to give the Herons a 4-0 lead in the match. More clinched the overall match for William Smith with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kusak at No. 1 singles. This is the second time this season that More defeated Kusak, who entered the weekend with an 11-1 mark in singles play. Denton's second win of the day came at No. 2 singles. She defeated Caroline Dunn 6-2, 6-1.

William Smith will return to action on March 14 when the Herons play Springfield College in Orlando, Fla.
