Statesmen play to 0-0 double OT draw with #7 Rensselaer

The Hobart College soccer team battled through to overtime periods to hold No. 7 Rensselaer to a 0-0 tie in a Liberty League game played in Troy, N.Y., this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 6-1-2 overall and 0-0-2 in Liberty League play.

The Engineers are now 8-0-2 and 1-0-1 in conference play. Hobart's best first half chance came in the 28th minute, when a corner was steered on goal by first-year Derrick Acheampong. RPI senior Paul Lentine was waiting inside the left post and headed the attempt off the line.

In the second half, the Statesmen turned in a couple scoring chances, including a deflected shot in the 75th minute that RPI keeper Ryan Nealon was able to drive to stop, before pouncing on the rebound.

The game remained scoreless after 90 minutes, forcing overtime. In the first extra session, Hobart applied pressure, out-shooting the Engineers 4-0, but Nealon was able to keep out the two attempts that found the target.

The Engineers were able to muster a pair of shots in the second OT, but were unable to break the deadlock.

Hobart finished with a 14-9 edge in shots, including 5-3 on goal. Rensselaer won the corner kick battle, 7-5. Nealon finished with five saves for Rensselaer. Senior goalie Tyler Serafine stopped all three shots he faced to secure his fifth shutout of the season and fourth straight.

The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 3, when they travel to take on Skidmore in another Liberty League contest at 2 p.m.
