Ithaca, New York – The fifth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team edged Ithaca 2-1 in a non-conference game this evening. Sophomore Hannah Wood scored late in the second half to push the Herons winning streak to nine games.
William Smith (9-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. After a penalty corner, junior Jessica Borbee
collected a rebound and lifted a shot past the Bombers' goalie. A
minute later Wood had two golden scoring opportunities turned aside by
Ithaca's Katie Lass.
In the 16th minute, the Bombers (6-3) tied
the game at one. Colleen Keegan-Twombly scored on a scramble in front of
the cage. Olivia Salindong was credited with the assist.
Late
in the first half, the Herons carried the majority of the play. Borbee
and Wood each had shots turned aside by Lass and then first-year, Fallon Adair steered a shot just outside the left post. The game remained tied 1-1 at halftime.
Early in the second half, the Herons' defense came up big. In the 40th minute, senior Madison Finn
made a clutch defensive save stopping a Caitlin O'Brien shot from
crossing the goal line. Less than a minute later, Keegan-Twombley had a
scoring opportunity blocked by a defender.
Wood's 14th goal of
the season proved to be the game-winner. In the 59th minute, she
collected a rebound, dribbled the ball along the end line, and
backhanded a shot past Lass into net. A little more than two minutes
later, Wood broke in on Lass all alone but was unable to slide the ball
past the Ithaca goalie.
The Herons dominated the stat sheet but
were only able to beat Lass twice. William Smith outshot the Bombers
19-7 and earned 12 penalty corners to Ithaca's six.
Junior Biz Chirco started in goal for the Herons and made four saves, while Lass started for the Bombers and made 10 stops.
William
Smith returns to Liberty League play on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they
travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take on Vassar. The conference clash
with the Brewers is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

O'Callaghan Helps Carry Oswego to Victory
KEUKA PARK, New York – The Oswego State field hockey used five second-half goals, including three from senior Lisa O'Callaghan, to pull away from host Keuka College on its way to a 6-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon. Oswego's win improves its record to 2-6 on the year while the Wolfpack drop to that same mark.
It took over 25 minutes for the Lakers to break onto the scoreboard, but then they did it in droves. The first tally came at 25:36 of the first half and would prove to be the only goal of the period. Freshman Bri Sturdevant used a pass from Maddie Nelson and found the back of the net for her first-career goal. Nelson's assist was also a milestone, as it represented the freshman's first-career point.
After the break, Oswego widened its lead to 5-0 with a four-goal spurt in less than 11 minutes. It started with an unassisted O'Callaghan goal at 38:37 and was followed by Grace Rinaldi's score off a Dani Cronk assist at 43:16. Less than a minute later, O'Callaghan was at it again, scoring her second of the game from a Rinaldi pass.
Just over five minutes later, O'Callaghan would notch her third of the day, this time off an assist from classmate Emily Lange.
The Lakers lit up the scoreboard one last time at 63:24, as freshman Lacey White recorded her first collegiate goal with Lange registering her second assist of the contest.
Senior Grace Lombardi earned the shutout win in goal for Oswego, making two saves.
Field hockey will play another nonconference opponent before returning to SUNYAC play, hosting Elmira College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
