Coast Guard Rescues Man From Grounded Boat Near Margate, NJ
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The Coast Guard rescued a man Thursday after his boat ran aground near Margate.
A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City spotted the 25-year-old man aboard the 21-foot boat and vectored in a boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Atlantic City, who transferred the man to Margate emergency medical services personnel ashore.
The man was severely affected by the cold when the 25-foot Response Boat crew rescued him, and was unable to communicate. He was not wearing a life jacket (and did not have a marine-band radio).
Watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay received notification from Tow Boat U.S. of the grounded vessel in the Risley Channel near Margate. Tow Boat U.S. reported the man called and requested assistance, but lost communications due to his cell phone battery dying.
Personnel from the Egg Harbor Township Police Department also assisted in the search.
The Coast Guard strongly urges all boaters to equip their boats with life jackets, a VHF-FM radio and the appropriate navigational charts. Boaters are also strongly encouraged to take a boating safety course and file a float plan before going out on the water.
